The Guide to Mobile Operator Choices

Choosing a new mobile service operator is a bit of a nightmare. There are so many to choose from in the UK, and they all seem to come out with new deals every week. But certain operators are better than others for some kinds of customers. Today we're talking about how to choose a mobile operator, and which network might be a good fit for you. So, if you're looking for a new service provider, read on to find out which is best...

Two Important Things...

Before you start looking at individual operators, there are two considerations that you need to take into account. The first is coverage. Companies provide mobile service by broadcasting a signal from a cell phone tower that your phone picks up. Different operators have different numbers of towers in different areas, meaning that some companies will give you better reception in your local area than others. Poor coverage will result in slow mobile internet speeds and bad call quality, which you obviously don't want. You can check out coverage with different operators on the OFCOM web site. You also need to consider the calling plan that you choose. This is key to getting you the service that you want at a price you can afford. A calling plan has monthly limits for the amount of calling minutes, mobile data and text messages that you can use for a fixed price. You need to choose these limits carefully to avoid paying for services that you don't use (if the plan is too big), or paying expensive extra fees for using extra services (if the plan is too small). Look at old mobile bills or track your phone use for a month to get a good idea of the size of calling plan that you need.

Three: Best Mobile Data Plans...

If you're an internet addict then you already know that mobile data fees are the most expensive part of any calling plan, which is why cheap calling plans have low mobile data limits. But if you want that mobile data at a cheap price, you should be looking at plans with Three. Three has the best prices on mobile data, plus they're one of a handful of operators that offers truly unlimited data plans. There's no fair usage policy, and Three will never slow your mobile internet speeds. With All You Can Eat Data you are free to use as much internet as you want.

T-Mobile: Best Big Contracts...

Heavy phone users tend to end up paying huge bills. Mostly this is because they constantly exceed the monthly limits on their contracts and have to pay lots of extra fees. The solution to this is to get a bigger contract, so you're not going to go over your monthly limits, but big contracts are pricey. T-Mobile offers the cheapest big contract, and it's an unlimited calling plan. The Full Monty has no monthly limits at all for calling minutes, texts or mobile data. For true phone addicts this is going to be the best plan that you can find.

O2: Best Business Mobile Deals...

Business mobile deals can get pretty expensive, since a good business phone is going to be a pricey high end device. If you're looking to get a work phone, then O2 offers the best business mobile deals. They have the widest range of incentive contracts on high end phones for the fairest prices. Plus, O2 has specific calling plans for business users with large data limits, so you'll always get that important email that you need. O2 also offers discounts to freelance or self-employed customers.

Vodafone: Best Cheap Deals...

If money is an issue for you as it is with most people these days, then you should take a look at Vodafone. Vodafone offers the cheapest contracts on the market, so you can get reliable service for next to nothing. Be aware that these contracts have particularly low monthly limits, especially for mobile data. But if you can keep to those limits, then Vodafone is going to get you a contract more cheaply than anyone else. They also offer unlimited text messages with the majority of their contracts.

Orange: Best Roaming Packages...

If you've ever travelled abroad with your mobile phone you'll know just how expensive mobile roaming charges can get. You pay premium prices not only for making calls and sending texts, but also for receiving them. However, if you're in the position of being a frequent traveller and having to use your phone abroad, then Orange has the solution for you. They have an optional roaming package that you can add on to your regular contract for a small monthly fee (around five pounds). This package will allow you to use your mobile within the EU for the same prices as you pay inside the UK. Orange also have the best deals on international calling, so you might want to consider them if you have friends and family living outside the UK.

EE: Best 4G Plans...

If you've got a 4G capable phone then you might be looking for a decent 4G mobile internet calling plan. In this case the only real choice is going to be EE, since they're currently the only UK operator that offers a full 4G plan with true 4G speeds. Other companies do offer limited 4G mobile data, but no other operator comes close to getting the speeds that you'll get with EE. These plans aren't going to come cheap though. Plus, all of EE's plans have data limits, and pretty small ones at that. There are no unlimited 4G plans available, and given how quickly a 4G connection can use up mobile data, this may be a little risky. But at this point you have little choice, and EE will give you the fast connection that you're looking for. On the bright side, all of EE's 4G mobile data plans come with unlimited calling minutes and unlimited text messages...
