Can UV Rays Harm Your Baby Through Your Cars Windows?

By 0 0

Sun Shade
There is nothing like driving and seeing the sun glaring on your baby’s face. This can be dangerous especially if you are driving for a long period of time. Infants have relatively thin skin and should not be exposed directly to sunlight under six months old. It is also not advisable to apply sunscreen protection to babies less than six month old. Many new vehicles have laminated windshields to filter out ultraviolet light. The rear and side windows are usually made out of non-laminated glass, which filters out UVB (shortwave) light, but not UVA (longwave) light.

Understanding UVA Rays:

  • UVA rays can penetrate clouds and glass
  • UVA account for 95% of UV radiation reaching the earth’s surface
  • Less intense than UVB, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent
  • Present in equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year
  • UVA penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays
  • UVA damages skin cells keratinocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis
  • The basal layer of the epidermis is where most skin cancers occur

Since UVA penetrates glass, the best way to protect your infant in the car is consider adding flat, tinted UV-protective film to your car’s side and rear windows. This may not be the most practical option for most folks, and purchasing a sunshade is the next best option. The following are a couple of top rated sunshades to protect your infant and family.
