Which is better uPVC or Aluminum Windows?

By | Aug 31, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Until 20 years ago 50% of homes in the USA were fitted with aluminum windows. Now that figure has changed and more than 50% of homes in the USA have uPVC or vinyl siding windows.

The reason for this big shift is easy to understand. uPVC windows cost the same price as aluminum windows but are much more energy efficient than aluminum windows. Aluminum is a metal that conducts heat and allows the transference of heat or cold between inside and outside. In contrast, uPVC has a high thermal resistance and thus provides an effective barrier between the inside and outside. So in the winter uPVC windows prevent heat escaping from a room and the cold from outside from entering a room; and vice versa in the summer. Installing uPVC windows with double glazing will save house holders money in HVAC bills.

uPVC windows have improved greatly over the last few years and are now available in any style of window. Also uPVC can be produced with any color or pattern, so it can be made to look like wood.

But are uPVC windows so much better than aluminum windows? Maybe not.

Firstly, aluminum is a metal that doesn't rust. Aluminum windows will last 60 years or more whereas uPVC windows are normally replaced after 35 years.

Secondly, aluminum frame windows tend to be smaller than uPVC windows and consequently block out less sunlight than uPVC windows.

Thirdly, aluminum windows probably offer better security to a home. Although uPVC windows are more secure than timber frame windows that rot and degrade, they can be flimsy. It is much harder to cut through aluminum than through uPVC.

And fourthly, it is easy to recycle aluminum. Many countries recycle aluminum cans at a profit. The same cannot be said of uPVC. uPVC when it is manufactured releases dioxin gases and the same is true when it is burned. Dioxins are believed to be carcinogenic and a serious pollutant. Most uPVC windows end up in a land fill site when they are thrown away. Comparing aluminum windows and uPVC windows it is clear that aluminum windows are better for the environment.

So it is not an easy task to answer the question: which is better aluminum or uPVC windows? uPVC windows save you money on heating and cooling bills but aluminum is better for the environment and lasts longer.
