Why Bicycle Commuting Is the Way to Go

By Edited May 1, 2015 1 2

With few exceptions, bicycle commuting is the most convenient option for most city dwellers. Look at the picture below.

It's a typical road in any major urban center. All of those drivers, sitting on their fat bottoms behind the wheel, are probably greatly frustrated and stressed. Now here's the good news. You don't have to be one of them. You can hop on your bicycle and scoot between the traffic. Like this lad in this picture.

So forget about rush hour. Go ahead, leave the office at 5:00. You'll never have to deal with traffic again. You can even ride through a park, rather than a gross, grey highway interchange. You can treat stop signs as yield signs and red lights as stop signs. No big deal. But beating traffic isn't the only reason in favor of bicycle commuting. Here's another popular motivation:

Yes, you can get a nice body with bicycle commuting. It's great for the body and great for the soul. Yes, not only can you become physically healthier, but mentally too. Exercise is a proven stress reliever. You can eat practically anything you want without gaining fat, provided you pedal hard and long. Yes, the longer and faster you pedal the better work out you'll get. On top of that, you'll be saving time.

That's right. Bicycle commuting saves you time. Remember that stressful rush hour we talked about eariler? Not only is it frustrating, but it's a waste of time. With bicycle commuting, you can reach your destination in less time and get some productive exercise at the same time. You also have increased mobility. Not a bad deal.

Speaking of good deals- biking to work can save you a wad of cash. You can get a functional bike for under $50 on Craigslist. Just clean and oil the chain every little while and that's it for maintenance. No more oil changes, new tires or other mechanic bills. And no more gasoline - that alone is a huge money saver. Perhaps you can even sell your current vehicle. Think of it as tens of thousands of dollars of free money, which essentially is the truth seen as you no longer want/need your vehicle! Going car-free is a tremendous relief. Trust me, I know from experience.

Biking is also better for the environment. We all share an interest in keeping a clean and pristine environment for future generations. Your community can have clean air. Your community will also thank you for not emitting so much noise now that you're not driving a big noisy truck.

So you must understand my point by now: Bicycle commuting is a thousand times better than driving. I could go on, but I think you get it.

Now, I have to warn you, bicycle commuting can also be dissapointing and frustrating. But only if you're doing it wrong. Check out my other articles to learn how to do it right.
