I can remember when I was young, about 40 years ago or so, playing at dinosaurs with my brother. Toys were simpler then and our dino entertainment mainly consisted of banging plastic dinosaur figures together whilst making roaring sounds.
A couple of decades later, I would sit and watch my sons playing with dinosaur toys. They were a little more high tech. Some of these dinos had robotic limbs, laser cannon and rocket launchers - but there was still plenty of roaring going on.
I'm pretty sure that in another few years I'll be watching my grandchildren playing with dinosaur toys. I'll probably get to take them to dinosaur movies as well.
The fact is, there's something about dinosaurs that kids just can't get enough off. Movies such as "Jurassic Park", "Toy Story" and "Dinosaurs" certainly cater to, and reinforce, children's love of these extinct reptiles. TV series such as "Walking With Dinosaurs" are entertaining, informative and educational all at the same time - and kids love them. Godzilla is another perennial favorite which pops up every now and again.
There are plenty of different dinosaur toys for kids to choose from - and the good news is that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg (although you can if you want to) to give your kids their dinosaur fix. You can get a bucket of 12 plastic dinosaurs, ideally suited for banging together and roaring, for as little as $ 10. Your kids will be delighted with them and they'll play for hours.
You can spend a lot more money if you wish - on themed dinosaur toys for example. Jurassic Park or Toy Story related merchandise will set you back quite a bit more, but you might think that it's worth it if your children are entertained.
Barney the Dinosaur is a firm favorite in many family homes, and there's plenty of merchandise to be had. Plush figures of Barney and his friends are popular - as are DVDs.
Dinosaurs with rocket launchers, robotic limbs and laser guns are increasingly popular, as are dinosaurs which transform into cars, trucks or other machinery (and back again). You can even get giant "sit on" dinosaurs which roar and move - but expect to pay a pretty penny for these.
All things considered, if you're looking for a gift for a child's birthday, then you can't go far wrong with a dinosaur related toy or DVD. They'll have hours of fun and learn something new at the same time.
