By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Have you ever asked yourself the question, "Why do people manipulate others?" If so, this article was written for you. In particular, we're going to look at the main reasons behind why people manipulate, some of the subtle ways people do this, and how to avoid being manipulated yourself. By the time you have finished reading this article, you should be better informed about why people manipulate others, and how you can avoid being a victim of this behavior.

The main reason behind why people manipulate others is to gain power or control. For example, in a traditional employer to employee situation, this can be done through verbal intimidation to maintain authority. Sometimes this can be very subtle – simply through choice of words rather than obvious aggression. They may be trying to gain some influence over you, or to direct you to a specific outcome of their choosing.

The reason behind them doing this could be to make up for their own insecure feelings, or to gain attention. They may well have low self esteem themselves if they continue to use this behavior to interact with people.

There are also some more subtle ways that people may try to manipulate others. The most common is to try to assert themselves over you and gain power with threats, intimidation, or simply by with holding information from you. Another way is to use guilt to make people do what you want. And finally, a very subtle form of manipulation is to help you when you do not want it – as a way of making you "owe" them later on.

So what can you do to protect yourself from these forms of manipulation? The first step is to realize you are being manipulated. You can find this out, by asking yourself "Am I finding it hard to say no to this person without fear?" If the answer is yes, then your power to decide freely is being taken away from you.

Next, realize that their attempt to manipulate you is largely based on their own feelings of insecurity, and not knowing how else to deal with the situation or interact with you. They are trying to gain power over you, to make up for their own feelings of powerlessness. Once you realize this, it should be easier to resist the manipulation. Don't allow them to control your feelings – you are free to respond with a "no" if you wish.

To summarize, this article has shown you some of the reasons why people manipulate others, and how you can resist being a victim to this. Now that you have finished reading, you should have a better understanding of this subject, and how to cope if you are faced with it.
