Why the Adriana Lima Diet is a Bad Idea for Women Who Want Quick, But Safe Weight Loss Results

By Edited May 18, 2015 0 0

If you're searching for info on the Adriana Lima diet to help you lose weight fast, I don’t blame you for wanting to follow her lead. Let’s face it, any woman who looks like that after having two (2) kids, must know something about dieting and weight loss that can help you. But the truth is I think it’s a bad idea to follow her example! In this article, you will discover why following her diet isn’t the smartest thing to do for women who want to lose weight quickly. You’ll also discover what you should do instead to get fast results safely.

But before getting into why the Adriana Lima diet plan is a bad idea, let’s look at how her diet became such a hot topic.

How this Controversy Began

At 5’10” the Brazilian stunner is one of the most beautiful women in the world and arguably the most popular Victoria’s Secret Angels ever, so there’s always been a lot of interest in what Adriana Lima does to look so hot on the runway. But the interest in her weight loss regimen intensified in 2011 when she disclosed the details of her diet during an interview with the Daily Telegraph just before the annual Victoria Secret Fashion Show.

Adriana Reveals the Details

During the Daily Telegraph interview, Adriana revealed that 9 days before the big Victoria Secret show she cuts out all solid foods from her daily diet. Instead of solid food intake, she goes on a liquid diet consisting only of a daily protein shake with an egg and water for the 9 days. She kicked it up a notch by cutting out the protein shake and even the water for the last 12 hours before the show.

Why Would She Go on a Liquid Diet?

Her rationale for following this type of liquid diet is that she could lose up to 8 lbs. during the 9 days by simply eliminating solid food.
Adriana caught a lot of heat over this from some experts who thought her program was extreme.

In her own defense, she made it clear that this was a once a year program to get her runway ready  for the show; the rest of the year she eats the way a normal healthy person would.

On the flip side, there are some experts who believe a 9 day weight loss plan like this won't harm you if done under the guidance of a dietician or a nutritionist (from everything I've read, she did have one).

I wouldn't have a problem with a healthy woman doing this for 2 or 3 days, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend following it for 9 days. You could suffer from mood swings, have a lower resistance to colds and become constipated. But those side effects are just the tip of the real problem with this regimen.

The Real Problem Boils Down to this

I believe Adriana Lima's diet won't give you enough calories for the 9 days. I don't know how many calories were in the protein shake with egg, but even if it was 800 calories, it wouldn't be enough to meet your daily energy maintenance level (the amount of calories the body needs to function while you're sitting on a couch). How much energy, in the form of calories, the body needs varies from person to person.

As I mentioned earlier, it wouldn't be a big deal to follow this regimen for 2 or 3 days. But when you stretch it out for another 6 or 7 days, the lack of calories can deprive you of essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients your body needs. You will lose weight quickly, but you will also lose lean body mass and it will slow down your metabolism. Unless you learn healthy eating habits, you will put back on the weight you lost or more.

Do you see why following this diet is a bad idea for most women? Now that you understand the real problem, I'm going to give you 5 tips you can use to achieve fast weight loss and do it safely.

5 Ideas You Can Use to Get Quick Weight Loss Results Safely

You really don’t need to follow any celebrity diet plan to get the body you want, and to help you here are 5 ideas you can use now, to slim down quickly.

Before you get started, make sure you know how much energy your body needs to work properly at maintenance level. There are 3 ways to calculate this number, but the quick & easy way is to multiply your current weight by X amount of calories to arrive at a ball park estimate. Since you want to lose weight, I recommend using 12 or 13 for the amount of calories. For example, a woman weighing 130 lbs. who wants to lose weight would multiply her current weight 130 lbs. x 12 to arrive at a estimate of 1,560 calories a day.

  1. Reduce your calorie intake just below your maintenance level through portion control;
  2. Cut out the following from your diet: all grains (especially breads & rice), added sugar, junk foods (yes that means cookies, cakes, donuts & potato chips), sodas and juices;

  3. Add in fresh vegetables, fresh fruit that’s low on the glycemic index, good sources of lean protein to your diet;

  4. Do total body workouts 3 – 4 times a week for at least 25 – 30 minutes each workout. Total body exercises work multiple muscle groups at the same time which makes them more effective than movements that target one part of your body. Get your body moving by doing bodyweight exercises, kettlebell or dumbbell routines, kickboxing or exercise jump rope routines; and

  5. You can ramp up your weight loss results through intermittent fasting. This type of fast calls for you to stop eating for a certain period, usually between 16 – 24 hours, and then resume your normal food intake at the end of the fast. You might have to experiment a bit with the fasting periods to find the optimum length of time that’s best for you. Also, the ideal fast should begin after your dinner in the evening, run through the following morning and ending around noon the same day.

Without a doubt, Adriana Lima’s controversial diet helps the super model and mother of two get her body in runway ready shape. But I hope that from what you've read here in this article,  you understand it’s not a good idea for most women to follow. For that length of time, her liquid diet doesn’t the body with enough calories. It can rob the body of essential nutrients, reduce lean muscle mass, slow down your metabolic rate and can cause you to regain the weight you lost. On the other hand, the 5 ideas presented in this article can help you safely achieve the quick results you want.
