Why To Choose Eco Friendly Clothing Made from Bamboo Fiber

By | Sep 21, 2011 | 4 Comments | Rating: 1

As people become more aware of eco friendly fashion trends, bamboo apparel is at the forefront. Organic bamboo clothing appeals to those who enjoy luxurious and soft clothing textiles as well as those who want to choose apparel that does not further facilitate damaging effects to the environment.

A new eco-business, Five Bamboo, is reinventing the manufacturing and production of bamboo apparel and is set to be a leader in this industry.

From the eco-friendly perspective, bamboo itself uses very little water, which conserves this natural resource. Bamboo plants mature within 4 years and are harvested through cutting instead of being uprooted, which preserves the integrity of the soil. Also, each plant provides 10 times more harvest than cotton and reabsorbs 5 times the amount of greenhouse gases than a regular tree grove. Moreover each plant releases 35% more oxygen than a regular tree, which also decreases greenhouse gases. Lastly bamboo is naturally biodegradable unlike synthetic polyester fibers.

From a textile point of view, bamboo apparel is luxurious and soft while being hypoallergenic due to its natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal defenses and being a sun-protective garment with a natural 50 UPF rating. Additionally, organic bamboo clothing is perfect for casual or outdoors wear as it wicks moisture away from the body during heat due to its ability to absorb 3-4 times more than cotton. But it also helps to keep the body warm in cold weather due to its ability to trap heat due to the micro-gaps in the bamboo's fibrous structure. Lastly, for those who are price conscious, bamboo apparel is incredibly strong and durable which means that bamboo clothing will outlast cotton and there is less need to replace them.

Five Bamboo is an eco-business run by five siblings (Zahlen, Xtehn, Vehro, Rohre and Qxhna Titcomb), who developed a new method of turning sturdy bamboo into soft yarn. Whereas other companies use the viscose process which results in leaching health-threatening sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide into the environment, Five Bamboo uses the closed loop lyocell process which does not use or release any harmful chemicals, solvents, or gases. Additionally Five Bamboo ensures that the production factories in China are abiding by environmental laws and standards and are providing fair and safe working conditions. Thus, the philosophy of Five Bamboo in being an eco-friendly company that is responsible for its actions on the environment has been carried out in all aspects of producing their organic bamboo clothing.

Choosing clothing is difficult enough but the emergence of organic bamboo clothing has made the choice easier for consumers. Being a sustainable, natural fiber with amazing thermo-control properties, and coupled with its luxurious feel, bamboo clothing beats out its synthetic rivals and even the ever-popular cotton.
