Why Use A White Noise Machine?

By | Feb 2, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Does your mind keep you up at night? Do your thoughts race on about the activities of the day and what's to come tomorrow?

It's an unfortunate yet entirely common problem for the stress of our waking lives on the job, at school, and at home, to spill into our mind as we try and fall asleep, distracting us from getting a proper nights rest. For some people, the solutions lies in using sleep aid on occasion, such as melatonin or diphenhydramine, to trick the mind into sleep. Others use prescription medicine for the same purpose, such as the ever popular Ambien sleep aid. And still other finds success in focusing on their breathing, practicing focus meditation and similar techniques to calm the mind and properly will it into sleep.

For people interested in this last area, the use of a white noise machine may be something that is of interest to them. A white noise machine is a sound machine that provides a constant array of sounds and white noise. This noise is used to channel a monotonous, repetitive sound into a persons attention span, essentially occupying their attention over other competing distractions, such as the persons own thoughts or the quiet but audible conversation of individuals in a nearby room. By focusing on the white noise, a person can block out these internal and external distractions and focus on their efforts on not thinking of any one thing in particular, just letting the mind go. Practicing a technique such as this at bed time can be very effective at sleep induction. In other words, focusing on white noise can help you fall asleep quicker!

Another benefit of this technology is that it's usually not sold on its own, but packaged with other interesting features. For instance, white noise machine sounds vary from the usual "fuzz" you might think of when you think of this technology, to rich luscious sounds of the rain forest, a thunderstorm, or the morning of the jungle waking up to the sunrise, with all the chirps and animal sounds of you'd expect in the Amazon. These extra sounds are relaxing to hear and not necessarily even for falling asleep, but just as a nice backdrop to a casual evening at home.

Using a white noise machine isn't going to knock you out like taking prescription drugs for sleep. Instead, it requires some effort and intention on the part of the user to compliment the natural effects of white noise on the brain. If you suffer from sleep problems or just like the use of sound machines to aid in your meditation efforts, using something like a Homedics white noise machine could compliment your efforts quite nicely, provided you are willing to give it an honest try!
