If you want to live a happier life, then there are certainly a lot of different things that you can do to give you some temporary sense of happiness. However, if you want the kind of happiness and satisfaction that will last, you will want to focus on self improvement. Self growth is one of the most fulfilling things that you can experience. There are several things that we all need in life and it can be categorized into 6 different needs. Tony Robbins calls this the 6 human needs. Here it is in no particular order.

The first is the need of feeling significant. Most people to one extent or another will want to know they he or she is important. This is why many people will go for those high degrees, buy those big homes, and drive those expensive cars. The feeling of being significant is enough for people to want to do whatever it takes to get it, even if it means pointing a gun to someone's head.

The second is the need for certainty. We all, at some level, need some sort of comfort. We need some things to be predictable in our lives. We need to feel secure that when we drive on the streets, that thin yellow line that separates us from another car running into us will do its job in preventing a crash to ever happen. Many people call this the comfort zone. Even if you are a spontaneous person, you will still want some level of certainty in your life. That being said, the third need is variety. Knowing how your day is going to go 1 month from today can make some people bored out of their minds. Having a bit of uncertainty and excitement in our lives is necessary as well.

The fourth need is love and connection. This is pretty obvious. It's hard to be happy without anyone around you. This is why they use things like solitary confinement in prisons as a form of punishment. We all want the feeling of connection with those around us. The fifth need is the need to contribute. We all want to feel that we were put on this planet to make some sort of a difference. The more you help others out of a desire to make this world a better place, the happier you will seem to be.

The final need is the need for growth. We all need to feel that we are improving ourselves in one way or another. You don't want to look back 5 years from now and realize that you haven't changed a bit. Growth and self improvement is something that will give us that inner sense of fulfillment and happiness that will actually last. Start setting goals for yourself and working to achieve them. Read books, gain more knowledge, doing all of these things will help you grow as a person and the more you grow, the happier you will tend to be. It all starts with self improvement.

Very nice article. I always like hearing other thoughts on how to improve. I like the final need most and I think setting goals is perhaps one of the simpliest yet most powerful ways to achieve what you want in life.

Very nice article. Although I enjoy the variety of life, right now I would just like a bit of certainty - a bit difficult to find right now.
