Nearly everyone from an early age is told about the importance of brushing their teeth twice or three times a day; and many people regularly floss and use mouth wash, but as yet, the vast majority of people don't clean their tongue. This is a pity because tongue cleaning is a vital part of oral hygiene.

Oral hygiene is so important not only for your health but also for making good impressions. People immediately notice decaying teeth and bad gums. They notice food stuff between teeth and they especially notice bad breath. On the health front, it is important to have healthy teeth and gums to prevent coronary problems later on in life.

The basics to having attractive teeth and good oral hygiene are not difficult to grasp and will stand you in good stead all your life. First you must ideally brush your teeth after every meal to remove unwanted bacteria and plaque. And after brushing your teeth at night it is a good idea to use dental floss to properly clean between your teeth. Dental floss is much more effective than a toothpick. If you don't floss, food rots between your teeth and will lead to cavities and other complications. Another important thing to do is to rinse your mouth with a mouth wash like Listerine that is antiseptic and will further kill any germs in your mouth.

But this is not enough in itself. A tongue cleaner or a tongue scraper is also a vital piece of equipment. It is easy to buy a cheap tongue cleaner online or at a drug store. A tongue cleaner is a simple device consisting of a thin strip of metal or plastic held in place by two arms. To use a tongue cleaner, simply scrap the tongue from the back of the tongue forward a couple of times. The first time you use a tongue cleaner you will be surprised at how much material comes off the tongue.

The tongue contains 50% of the bacteria that lives on the mouth and these bacteria are responsible for causing bad breath or halitosis. By scraping the tongue every morning you remove the bacteria and prevent bad breath. To clean your tongue only takes a minute and yet it makes a big difference to your oral hygiene.
