There are many households today that use different types of home water filters particularly if they will be drinking water from tap. It is impossible to know if the water in your home is contaminated or not without having it tested in a laboratory. However, there are some people who would not have experts test their water to check if it has contaminants. The best thing to do then is to use a home water filter if you are not sure of its safety. It will also be more economical than having to buy bottled water as an alternative for the water that you drink at home.

There are different types of water contaminants which is why home water filters have been developed to effectively filter each type of it. Taste and odor contaminants are among the most common. As its name suggests, this can affect the taste and smell of your water. There are different reasons for it but most often, it is because the water that goes out of the tap has been treated with the chemical chlorine. There are also some instances wherein GAC or Granular Activated Carbon has been mixed with the water. Although its purpose is to absorb contaminants, it may in turn affect the water's taste. Using a home water filter on GAC-treated water may cause it to turn cloudy in the first few weeks but it will clear up over time.

Water that has noticeable particles are obviously contaminated by rust and sediment. When you leave a glass of water for minutes, you will notice that small particles collect at the bottom. This type of water contaminant though is the simplest to filter. Whole house filters are ideal to be used for this as it can protect not only your drinking water but also that which of other home appliances such as ice makers and dishwashers.

Bacteria and parasites are dangerous water contanimants as it can cause illnesses particularly to people who are vulnerable to it. It is usually homes that rely on well water who may be at risk to having bacteria and parasite contaminated water. It can be difficult to determine on your own if your water has bacteria or parasites as it cannot be seen and it does not always affect the taste and smell of the water. The type of home water filters that are considered to be most effective in getting rid of this type of water contaminants are those that have filter cartridges.
