Why learn screen printing?

Not very many hobbies can pay off in the real world, some can, but most cannot. Tshirt printing, or screen printing, is a great skill to learn because it has so many advantages that other hobbies just don't have. Learning to screen print can open up so many doors for you. Don't believe me? Keep reading and I'll tell you all of the reasons you should learn the art of tshirt printing. But first, a lesson in the history of screen printing.

The History of Screen Printing

Screen printing dates back as far as the Song Dynasty(960–1279 AD), it was first discovered in China and at the time it was called silkscreen printing because silk was the material they used to make the screens before polyester and other materials were created. Eventually, screen printing made it's way around the world and Andy Warhol is considered responsible for making it a true artform. After his work the industry exploded and it has boomed ever since. There just isn't a better or even comparable way to print on just about anything, screen printing is the number one way and will be for the forseeable future. Which is exactly why I think anyone interested in art should learn the ropes of this process, it's a gold mine! But if you need some more convincing, here are some more reasons you should consider it:

Reasons You Should Take Up This New Hobby:

It's extremely versatile – Learning how to print tshirts isn't limiting yourself to just tshirts, once you learn screen printing in general you can then print on bascially any material as long as you use the right inks and procedure. Think of all the possibilities! Coffee mugs, posters, stickers and even hats are all things you could start with.

It can make you money – With a little practice, you could easily turn your screen printing hobby into a money making one! Start offering your services to your friends or local companies that might need promotional materials like posters, flyers, tshirts, you name it! Sports teams need jerseys every year so you could probably do it for them and make a little money on the side too. Tons of people do this as their full time job, and it all started as a hobby! You can do the same.

Makes great gifts – Since you can now make any product custom to your liking, you can also make the perfect gift for your friend or family member(or yourself). You can make them something that they can't get anywhere else. And those gifts are usually the best ones.

It's fun! - This might just be the most important reason to learn how to screen print. Having a good hobby is something everyone should do, it keeps you busy, keeps you from being lazy and most of all, it keeps you happy! If you aren't having fun doing what you're doing, then it isn't worth doing in the firat place. Find something you love, and do it forever. That's the best advice I have ever been given and I follow it every day. You should too.

In Conclusion...

So there you have it, there are some pretty convincing reasons why I think creative people should take on the art of tshirt printing. If you disagree, that's okay! Maybe it's not for everyone, but don't trash it before you try it. Thanks for reading and I hope I've inspired you to try something new.
