Why not to buy a watch phone?
Watch phones are relatively new types of products and the available models are still scarce, but this is not the issue. The issue is weather is it worth buying or not watch phones, so in this little article I'm gonna put this problem to its paces and formulate a conclusion based on rational factors.
So, let's see first what a watch phone is, a non academic definition: a watch phone si a cell phone in shape of a watch that offers the basic functions a mobile phone usually provides. It's not what you can call an ortodox sollution, but it's here and we have to analyze it before dismissing the idea.
So, let's see the strong points of a watch phone, which even if are few they're worth considering:
- It substitutes two devices: a watch and a phone, so there are fewer things for you to carry
- A watch phone always comes with a Bluetooth headset included in the package, so it becomes almost usable
- It'seasier to verify if you have missed calls or messages
- It's always with you, so you can be reached anywhere (this might also be annoying at some point in time if you don't want to be disturbed)
Now, the list of weak points you have to consider when purchasing watch phones:
- A watch phone is bigger than a normal watch, thus less fashionable or even ugly
- It weights more than a watch so your hand will support more strain, making it uncomfortable to use long periods of time
- The screen is really small, so precision touchscreen operations is out of the question, even with the stylus
- Phone functions are basic, so if you need more than calls, video calls and SMS you might want to reconsider
- Besides the phone you also have a bluetooth headset, so there are two things that need to be recharged and if you run out of juice on the earpiece you'll have to rely on the speaker, which is usually weak on a watch phone and can be heard by anyone surrounding you.
- Additional software is limited, mainly because there isn't yet a largely used OS special designer for watch phone, so developers are not yet too interested in this matter.
Those list being made I can only conclude that a watch phone is a device for people with special needs, not a mass market gadget, but in time, if interest for this concept rises, things might change.
