Windows Mobile 6,5 upgrades coming to a smartphone near you

By | Oct 12, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Windows Mobile 6.5 has been finished for some months now, but the first devices have come out last week together with the release of Windows Mobile Marketplace. It has been some time now since the Windows Mobile platform has seen such a boost in new technology and advertisement. Microsoft even published a television commercial something that we haven't seen in years for Microsoft smartphone software.

The release of 6.5 brings a lot of changes to the platform. Most of these changes have to due with finger friendliness and more fluid web integration. Even though a lot of people agree that this update could and should have been much more, the general consensus is that the upgrade is well worth while and makes the device perform a lot better and definitely more finger friendly.

So when we will we be seeing these upgrades roll out to our devices? Sadly Microsoft has announced a list with devices that will receive an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5, and there are not many on this list. The list includes the Touch Pro 2, Touch Diamond 2, HTC Snap, and the new Samsung Omnia phones that have been coming out recently (including Omnia 2 and Samsung Omnia pro. Most of these devices sport a WVGA (800x480) resolution, this makes the interface of Windows Mobile really shine and look great.

HTC, one of the bigger manufacturers of Windows Mobile smartphones has announced that their older devices are not getting an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5. A device like the Touch HD that is not even a year old and has near identical specs to the Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 is deemed outdated and will therefore not receive and official update from HTC. What it boils down to is the fact that it costs HTC money and time to make a ROM for these devices and they don't want to spend. Another thing that factors is that they want the users to upgrade to the newer models like the upcoming Touch HD 2.

So has the consumer no options to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5? Well you can in fact upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5, if you are feeling adventures you can find a lot of custom-roms on a website called XDA-Developers. On the forum there are different groups of people that create these updates for older HTC Smartphone models. Most devices are supported and why not try something new with an older device you have lying around?
