Winter Driving Tips For Truck Drivers
Winter has arrived and its time to think about winter driving techniques. In general the cure-all for winter driving is to slow down. Driving at lower speeds will reduce the frequency of traffic accidents. Once you have started to drive slowly there are some other things you can do that will aide your winter driving.
Trucking jobs are hard, but winter driving doesn't have to be if you have proper tire tread. Replacing tires before they get too dull will give you better traction in the rain and snow. Most truck drivers and maintenance shops pull tires when tread is near or below 4/32. This rule of thumb should be extended to 7 or 8/32 during the winter. Having more tread on the tire will give you better traction.
Another thing you may want to consider is tire "siping." This is really the process of scoring grooves in your tire. The grooves give you more traction. This should only be done by a professional with proper tools. Tire "siping" may also be counter productive on dry roads.
Tire pressure will also keep you efficient and driving safe during winter driving conditions. Checking tire pressure levels often will keep your tires inflated properly. Tires that are properly inflated wear differently than those that are. Winter weather causes tire pressure to drop, so check your pressure more frequently as the temperature drops.
Our last tip is regarding tire chains. Tire chains can save your life during winter driving conditions so it is very important that you know how to install the chains. Another issue with chains is that if they are not installed properly they can be dangerous. A tip here is to drive with your window open just enough that you can hear if there are any issues with your chains. This will keep you and the mooring public safe.
