Winter Tires - Get Yourself Out Of Thick Snow
Whenever winter comes, it's either you get amused with the outpouring snow –because you get to play around and throw snow balls –or you get annoyed because your car can't get through the thick pile of snow covering the street. If you find yourself beaming on the latter situation, then it's time you consider buying winter tires.
A winter tire has the ability to give extra braking, traction and handling –exactly the things you need to drive smoothly on ice or snow. Each tire has a specialized rubber compound that can handle cold temperatures. It also has a tread design that can strongly grip on ice and the ability to remain flexible to prevent building up of ice for better traction. If you're vehicle is not geared with snow tires, you would probably end up fishtailing on the corners and it will be difficult for you to drive, up especially because icy roads are slippery and sometimes clouded with thick snow.
In addition to the tread design, the grooves are 25% to 35% deeper than the regular tires, and therefore, it can provide a better road grip. The special grooves within the tread carry more snow and expel it out when the tire rotates, and thus providing more snow traction. Also, it has a more sophisticated and high density design that can cut through the water or ice so that the tread can have a better contact with the road.
As compared to regular tires, winter tires have life-saving technologies such as the electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. Probably, the only downside is that, the gripping ability can sometimes be critical. Sometimes, when the road is too slippery and covered with very thick snow –say on a very heavy snow day –the tire has a tendency to lose its tight grip, and when the grip loosens up, some of the features will not do their jobs; the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. But nonetheless, these tires make the perfect companion to battle with the winter season.
If you're looking for some really good tires that are all season, performance or winter, you could do worse than put Goodyear tires on your list. Where we live, the all season tire would not survive the winter, but a good snow tire can get you out of a dangerous jam! I always have two sets of tires. Great article!
