Winter at The Hotel del Coronado

People normally don't associate winter fun with a seaside resort but the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego California has got the season covered, in ice!
With their Skating by the Sea attraction visitors can skate on a temporary ice rink, located on the oceanfront Windsor Lawn. Imagine ice skating next to the Pacific Ocean, and if that isn't enough, you can also feel good about skating at the Hotel del Coronado because a portion of all ice skating proceeds goes to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of San Diego.
At night you can ice skate and enjoy the sight of the Hotel illuminated in 100,000 lights! On Thursday evenings you can "Disco on Ice," with every person dressed in disco attire receiving free skate rentals. If you don't feel like ice skating, you can enjoy a hot beverage while sitting next to one of the many fire pits and take-in the beauty of the hotel while you watch the skaters.

Visitors and guests can ice skate daily from mid November through early January, and lessons are available.

Hotel del Coronado is also all decked-out in its Christmas finest! The first thing you will notice as you enter the lobby is the 20 foot tall Christmas Tree decorated from top to bottom with an array of holiday lights and ornaments. There is even an ocean theme tree decorated with starfish, seahorses, and other spectacular sea theme ornaments. In addition, throughout the hotel and shopping area you will notice festive holiday decorations.
Once you have checked-in you'll want to check-out…the shopping that is! The Hotel del Coronado offers some of the most unique gift and decorative items that you will find. If there's a Marilyn Monroe fan on your Christmas list, you can purchase a hand crafted Marilyn Monroe Christmas ornament. For the person who loves to collect unusual and beautiful ornaments, the Hotel del Coronado has created an annual collector's ornament every year since 1993 and this year, they are offering a beautifully boxed set of their top 14 ornaments. There is something for everyone at the Del's gift shops!

After a long day of shopping, relax and enjoy the Hotel Del's "Spa La La La La." The spa is offering a brand new menu of wellness-inspired treatments including their Shell Coronado Facial and a De-stress Hydrotherapy Soak.
Top off your evening with a delicious dining experience at one of the many restaurants located at the hotel. Then, it's off to your room to sleep to the relaxing sounds of the ocean. Just another winter at the Hotel del Coronado!

Hi Buffy10, great to hear from you! Thanks so much for the comment!!
Nice feature. We stayed at the Loews Coronado resort for our honeymoon which was up the highway. We would drive in every evening and walk around and would cap off the evening with a double dip ice cream cone (PB & chocolate) from the ice cream store at the Hotel del Coronado.
My family and I have also stayed at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, it's beautiful. The Del is a just a short drive away, and we've had our share of ice cream at the Moo Time Creamery as well! Thanks for the comment bh25!
Great info! And you are right about saying that not too many people are commonly associating winter with resort vacations. This article will make them to start thinking twice about it. :-)

My parents stayed here when I was younger, I still have a t shirt they brought back.
Wow, that is great vladimirmolotkof; I love getting t-shirts from the various places I visit.
Nice article. I didn't realize the hotel did so much decorating for the holidays, I guess I've only been there in the summer and maybe for spring break. It is a great old hotel and your photos really captured the special charm of the place. Great job!
Yes, Christmas time at the Del is beautiful! Thank you for your comment!
I used to live in LA and I'd go down to Coronado on the Amtrak on the weekends. The Del was my favorite place to stay. I felt like I'd been there in a former life. You made me miss it so much. I love your pictures. Do you know about the ghost legends? I have a great book on it. Contact me if you're interested.
Hello oxfordian; Thank you for your kind words, I'm happy this article brought back some nice memories for you. I have heard about the "ghost" legends; and when I was at the Del I saw a couple of books on the subject in their gift shops. Thanks for your offer, but I have some information on the subject, and in the future I may write an article about it (you might also want to consider writing about your experiences at the Del and/or about the ghost). Thanks again!
Great pics. The Coronado is great any time of year, but looks magical for the holidays.
