A cardigan is a great piece of clothing to have in the wardrobe. It can be worn at anytime and over so many different pieces. Many times, women don’t know how to wear the cardigan and when to wear it. Below is a guide to help you better understand how to style and choose a cardigan.

How to wear
A cardigan can be worn in many different ways. It can be worn open or closed or with a little broach or pin at the top. When open, it can be worn with just a few middle buttons opened. If you are going for a more casual look, leave it open. If you want a more conservative look, button it up or button at least two or three buttons in the middle. For a more trendy look, leave it open and roll up the sleeves to your elbow. This will make the cardigan tighter on your arms and give you a much more fashionable look.

Styling the cardigan
To style the cardigan, think about what outfit you are pairing it with. You can style the cardigan with so many different outfits. It can act in place of a jacket or coat, but allow you to continue to show off your other clothes. For a more casual look, wear it over a white t-shirt or tank and wear some jeans or shorts underneath. For a more conservative look, wear it over a button down white shirt with some work trousers or a pencil skirt. For an evening look, choose a black cardigan or another dark color like brown or navy and wear it over a tank and leggings or tight jeans. Finally, for a daytime look, you can pair a shorter cardigan over a day or summer dress.

When to wear
A cardigan can be worn at anytime. If you have a cotton cardigan, it can be worn almost all year round. In the winter, you can add it to your sweaters while in the summer, you can wear it over t-shirts or dresses or skirts. Bring the cardigan with you on vacation or when you are going out for the day. It is much lighter to carry around than a jacket so you can stick it in your purse easily, and it will keep you just as warm, especially if it is a wool or cashmere cardigan. For the office, it is a great place to have one since it always looks conservative and is versatile enough to pair with most office outfits. Some women, to stay warm, will even wear them underneath a suit jacket since the cardigan can be well hidden and continue to keep them warm.

Material
Cardigans come in so many different materials. The most luxurious is the cashmere cardigan. These are very soft and great to wear in the winter, fall and spring. They will keep you really warm and still help you maintain style and fashion. Other materials include cotton, silk and wool. The wool cardigan tends to be a bit scratchy. You will have to pair this with a long sleeve shirt so your arms will not itch. It can be very warm though and it is cheaper than cashmere so it is a good alternative. Silk cardigans are great for evenings and to dress up your outfits a little more. They are not as warm as wool or cashmere and will allow your body to breathe well. Silk can be pretty expensive as well. Finally, the cotton cardigan is useful for something light to wear at anytime, especially during the summer. Cotton will keep you cool and it is a much lighter material.

A cardigan is a great article of clothing to have in your closet. It can be worn during so many different occasions to keep you warm. Also, it is light enough for you to easily carry around at all times. Finally, there are so many trendy cardigan styles that you can remain fashionable while keeping warm.
