So you have a great idea for a your first film outlined and you want to write it out in script format. If this is a project you plan on producing yourself, you can honestly type or write it however you want. If you’re looking to sell it however, you’re going to need to make sure it’s typed up in the proper script format. Even though I mostly produce my own written scripts, I still prefer to type them up in the proper format anyway. It’s a good habit to get into. And with Celtx, there’s really no reason not to. If you don’t already know about Celtx, it is a free scriptwriting program available for both Mac and Windows. Yes, I said free! There is a paid version available aptly titled, Celtx Plus, that does offer some added features, but to the average low budget filmmaker the free version should be more than enough. The great thing about using Celtx for me was that you could move between computers and operating systems to work on your script. I had written with costly software before that only worked on one operating system or another and I found it becoming an obstacle in getting work done.
Now Celtx has gone even further and when you sign up to get your free version of Celtx, you are also create a Celtx account and have what is called a “Cloud”. Here you can store scripts and files and access them from any computer, tablet, or mobile device. You can also allow access to certain people as a reader or writer allowing them access to read your scripts or even edit them and/or make notes. Not to mention the Celtx website also has a very healthy community and forum filled with other writers and producers just like you that you can connect with. Celtx offers so much more than just the ability to type up scripts, they even have integrated apps including, Celtx Scout1. Using your mobile phone or other device, you can scout locations, props, talent, crew, equipment, wardobe and just about anything else you may need for your project. Just take a picture, add comments and you can save it to your “Cloud”. So what are you waiting for? Get that script written and ready for production with Celtx.
