Year Around Sports in Vancouver, Washington

It may seem that cooler days take away the opportunity to keep fit and enjoy exercise. It does not have to be that way if you look at all the ways you can burn calories while remaining warm and protected from the elements.

SCIS

Indoor Soccer

Where?

In Salmon Creek, there is an indoor soccer arena named Indoor Sports. If you live outside Salmon Creek area, the arena has easy access from the, I-205 freeway.

What is available?

Indoor Sports has leagues for all ages and skill levels along with coed teams. You can register online for a team or as an individual who will be placed on a team. There is a workout area above the field for parents to exercise or to keep yourself fit. The field can be rented for private games or training sessions. If you are registered as an individual player, you can keep tabs on game days by the online schedule.

What equipment is needed?

You will need safety gear in order to play, which includes indoor/turf soccer shoes, shin guards, long socks to cover shin guards, and shorts. If you are playing the position of goalie, you will need additional gear. The only caveat is no cleats of any kind are allowed. All equipment can be purchased or rented from Indoor Sports.

Rock Wall

Where?

In downtown Vancouver, there is an indoor rock wall company named Source Climbing Center. There is easy freeway access via, I-5.

What is available?

Featured at Source are a variety of imitation rock walls to stretch the skill of any climber. You can purchase a day pass and spend the day free climbing, but if you want to increase your climbing skills, there are classes available. Registering for the CLIMB201-Climb On class will give you two hours of climbing with an instructor, all rental equipment included, and orientation with climbing equipment. All participants must be age twelve or older for the class, but anyone can climb on a day pass.

What equipment is needed?

You will need to wear comfortable clothes, which allow a range of motion, socks, climbing shoes, and a climbing harness. The equipment is available to rent or purchase from Source Climbing Center.

MIA

Hockey

Where?

Mountain View Ice Arena is the place to enjoy hockey. The arena is located on the east side of Vancouver with access through, I-205.

What is available?

There are leagues for adults and children if you are interested in playing on a hockey team. If you are a beginning ice skater, then you can sign up for lessons in skating with private or group sessions. The classes are intended to make you proficient in balance, starting, stopping, and speed. You can buy a day pass to enjoy free-form skating occasionally or join a skills camp to learn how to skate well.

What equipment is needed?

You will need ice skates, a helmet, hockey stick, shin guards, and body protective gear. All gear can be purchased or rented from Mountain View Ice Arena.

Batting Cages

Where?

If you crave swinging the bat again you need to go to Brush Prairie’s, Duell’s Dinger Dome located off of 503.

What is available?

Duell’s Dinger Dome offers fun for highly skilled or first-time baseball players. Each cage has a pitching speed for baseball or softball and automatically pitches and retrieves balls. Cages can be rented by the hour or by the token (40 hits). Their slogan is, “So good even bacon can’t make it better.”

What equipment is needed?

With the purchase of batting tokens, you will be provided with the necessary equipment which includes, a full-face shield helmet, and a variety of bats to choose from specifically made for batting cages. You will want to wear clothes, which allow easy movement and shoes, which gave traction. The Dinger Dome has made safety very important by posting etiquette and rules, painting warning areas on the floor, and using self-closing doors.

Wild Acres

Equine

Where?

Wild Acres Horse Boarding is a wonderful place to board your horse and keep in trim all year around. The boarding stables are located in Vancouver, Washington off, I-205.

What is available?

Wild Acres Horse Boarding is open to beginning riders through expert equestrians. A huge covered arena is available to practice skills along with round pens, and trails are for year-around use. After your exercise, there is a café to refresh yourself.

What equipment is needed?

You will need a horse and tack, comfortable and durable riding clothes, riding boots, and a helmet. If you do not own a horse, Wild Acres may make accommodations for you to exercise one of the horses they board.

Westside Golf Range

Golf Range

Where?

For the golfer who wants to keep their swing in practice even when it is cold the Westside Golf Range will fit the bill quite nicely. The range is located east of I-205 in Salmon Creek.

What is available?

Countless heated stalls enable you to buy a bucket of golf balls, step onto the Astroturf and swing to your heart’s content during the cold months. If you are a beginner, there are private and group lessons available to teach you how to play like a pro. The clubhouse offers a room to warm up and a selection of items to improve your game.

What equipment is needed?

You will need comfortable clothes, which allow a full range of motion and keep you warm, golfing shoes, and golf clubs. All equipment may be rented or purchased from Westside Golf Range.

Even if the weather begins to turn fowl and the desire to exercise begins to wane it is possible to rekindle the craving to burn calories and workout indoors with a team or by yourself. Keep your body fit and ready for summer games.
