Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

Yeast infections are usually found in the vaginal and anal areas. These infections are pretty common all around the world. Having a yeast infection during pregnancy is even more common and is caused by certain microscopic fungi. Many women might have some form of yeast in their vagina and still be unaware of its presence. This is because not all kinds of yeasts cause irritation. Only when it starts growing fast and accumulates in large quantities does it become a source of discomfort.

If you are taking antibiotics while you are pregnant, you have a greater chance of getting a yeast infection during pregnancy. This is due to the fact that some antibiotics negatively affect certain bacteria that are present in the vagina for protection against infections.

Symptoms of a yeast infection during pregnancy are:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • White or “Cheesy” discharge
  • Pain while having sexual intercourse

The perfect way to avoid such infections is to stay clean and dry. So, if you are pregnant and want to prevent yeast infections, follow these steps:

Keep Yourself Dry

Yeast grows and thrives in wet and warm conditions. Thus, it is very important that you properly dry yourself after bathing or showering. If you have a big family, try not to use an already used, and still wet, towel. Take out a fresh or dry one each time you take a bath. People who suffer from frequent yeast conditions should take showers over baths. If you like swimming, make sure you change into dry and airy clothing soon after you have gotten out of the pool.

Oxygen is also very important for keeping yeast away. Try wearing light cotton underwear that is breathable instead of nylons and synthetic fabrics. It is also good to change your underwear after exercising because sweaty underwear may also cause infection.

Sleep Easy

Wearing light cotton pajamas or night gowns will let air pass through and will allow oxygen to reach your genital area.  If you are someone who exercises or does physical work during the day which makes you sweaty, it is advised that you take a nice warm shower before bed to clean your body. Also, thoroughly dry yourself afterwards.

Avoid Perfumed Soaps and Other Such Stuff

Perfumed soaps can cause irritation in the genital areas. The same holds true for hygiene sprays and detergents. Even though it has not exactly been proven that they contribute to the occurrence of yeast infections, they are known to irritate or cause burning and itching sensations. Thus, it’s best to avoid them.

Make Yogurt a Part of Your Diet

Try to make yogurt a daily part of your diet. Yogurt is not only excellent for your health, but its live cultures help keep yeast infections away.
