Yoga is a philosophy of developing and maintaining a balance between mind, body, and spirit. It began in India but has become a popular exercise and lifestyle all around the world.

The mind, body, and spirit find a balance through a combination of stretching exercises and meditation. The Yoga poses themselves are asana which is the physical aspect of Yoga.

To most people yoga is a good exercise routine which is practiced solely for the benefit of the body. To the people who embrace the philosophy of balance and harmony of the mind and body it is much more than a series of stretches and poses.

Yoga (asana) is normally practiced on a mat which is placed on the floor. A series of stretches and poses are held and maintained for a predetermined amount of time. The poses that are practiced are dependent on the skill level of the person or class involved.

Each pose has a physical, holistic, and mental purpose. For example there is a pose called "Bound Angle" this pose improves the flexibility and strength of the thighs (physical), it helps with sciatica (holistic), and helps with depression, anxiety, and fatigue(mind and spirit).

Yoga is a safe but somewhat physically demanding way for a person to experiment with holistic healing. If you have the will to attempt these poses it may help to relieve some of the symptoms of common conditions. Talk to a doctor before beginning a Yoga routine to ensure that it will be safe for you.

As with any exercise the more practice put into it the better you will become and achieving and maintaining the poses. Yoga is one of the best exercises for improving flexibility. It is also a socially approved activity and most people will not think you're too strange for practicing it.

Yoga is a demanding and fulfilling experience whether you go in for the entire philosophy or simply adapt a few parts to meet the needs that you have.
