Success means different things to different people. If you're not sure what you want, spend time thinking about it in detail. Research areas of interest to you. Create a definition success that fits you and your interests. You can change it, so if you're really stuck, pick a candidate and get started. You'll find out pretty quickly if it's the right path for you.
Whatever your personal definition of success is, you must pursue it with all your heart and not stop until it is achieved. Achievement is a way of life and living. A way of transforming things and ideas to good purpose.
The only way you can guarantee failure is to quit. If you persist in your quest for what you believe is truly worthwhile, your life has hope, meaning, and purpose. Success is in your hands, no one else.
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt
Plan for Success
It's important that we develop plans, not just aspirations. Goals and generalized thoughts are weak and too abstract to motivate. While the desire to do something great is critical to develop meaningful plans, noble aspirations are not enough.
Plans require research, priorities, solutions, and work arounds to get past obstacles. You need to develop strategies for accomplishment and turn vague desire into concrete action. The desire to do something great is not the same as accomplishing something great. Accomplishment requires action, priorites, and purposefully directed effort.
Incremental successes are motivating as you watch your progress towards your objective. Keep track of what you are doing, so you can see your development. Privately give yourself kudos for a job well done.
Take pride in doing well, but keep your ego in check. We all need to be able to see and adapt to truth. When we get a big head we stop listening and learning, so enjoy the progress but stay humble.
Be a Leader
The satisfaction you experience from success will depend on the personal significance of your plans. If you are doing something that has great meaning to you and to those around you then your plan has great power to motivate you and others around you to action. The greater the cause the greater you are.
Don't try to follow someone else's path to success because your resources, talents, and personality are different. The rules for success are dynamic and change with time and circumstance. Each one of us needs to make our own way. You can do it.
While you don't want to follow someone elses plan you can learn a lot from their experiences and the things that happened to others on their way to success. Learn from these experiences, positive or negative.
"You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore." - Christopher Columbus
Paralysis by Analysis
No great achievement is accomplished without failure. It's all part of the growth process. The set backs and dead ends make victory all the sweeter, and teach you things that will help you avoid bigger problems later on. If we try too hard to avoid all possible problems we end up disfunctional. Risk is a necessity, just keep the risk within manageable limits. Don't try to eliminate it. It's not possible.
Often when bad things happen we learn the wrong lesson. It's important to remember that there are a lot of reasons for things going wrong. We seldom have enough knowlege about a situation that went bad to really make sense out of what happened for any specific situation. You want to avoid paralysis by analysis. Limit this normal tendency to try to 'fix' yourself to what is real, measureable, and concrete. You can undermine your confidence when you just need to keep going so the odds can work in your favor.
When you have a statistically significant sample of work (gigs, sales calls, presentations, etc.) you can look at what you've done and learned. Always look for ways to improve, but don't jump to conclusions prematurely. Especially negative ones!
Successful plans are dynamic. Course corrections will often be required based on changing resources and circumstances. This is because the future is unknown and unpredictable. Planning needs to be a constant process that incrementally leads you from where you are, to where you want to be.

Fill Your Mind With Great Ideas
Look for great quotes that are related to the things that you are trying to accomplish. Memorize them, and think about them. Your brain is a computer and the greater the power you feed into your brain, the greater you will be. We are what we think. Greatness attracts greatness.
Read books that uplift and inspire. Help others around you to have faith and achieve good. This not only helps them but inspires you. Build your values, seek for truth.
Take courses that teach things that will be helpful in your persuit of excellence. Learning expands the brain's capacity and can keep you young. Research ideas completely unrelated to your objectives. Great things happen when you discover new principles and truth. They often have the ability to enhance and refresh ideas we already had, or open whole new pathways of interest and discovery. True wealth is the abundance of good.
Don't get so focused on your plans that you lose touch with people, society, and the needs of those around you. Seek a balance between career and humanity. Our value in life comes from service that benefits others not exploitation. We should seek to make a difference in everyone around us. Life is not exclusively about you and your goals.
Achieve, grow, prosper and BE a winner. Success is a way of life not the achievement of one specific goal.
We are all unique and I believe we have different missions in life. Find yours.
