Independent Ebook Authors

Are you concerned with your finances? The cost of living continues to increase, which negatively affects your lifestyle. In order to earn more money per month, why not enter the profitable world of self-publishing? Nearly anyone can create ebooks and publish them on the electronic retail sites like Amazon, iTunes, Barnes and Noble, and others. The steps required are now quite simple. Many thousands of regular people have become successful ebook authors. They write what they want to, determine their own retail prices, publish when they want, and live virtually anywhere in the world.

Anyone can become a successful author, writing about their personal knowledge and experiences. An eager audience of readers is hungry for information that you can provide. Your work can be turned into a monthly revenue source of extra income. Many modern business workers are no longer receiving training that was once standard. You may have received far more training that people in your field today. This, coupled with your experience, makes you an authority. You can profit from your knowledge. Self-publishing ebooks in topics that are relevant to your background, can earn you lucrative royalties.

As an authority, you can begin writing ebooks. The steps to do so are now quite simple compared to traditional publishing. Modern electronic readers, such as the Kindle and Nook, and companies such as Amazon and Apple, have revolutionized the entire business. Millions of electronic readers have been shipped and many more millions of reader applications have been installed. A vibrant customer base for ebooks now demands quality content. Independent authors are filling the demand by writing ebooks that are based on personal knowledge and career experience. The electronic retailers provide the sales and distribution platforms for free. An author just has to choose a topic that aligns with their expertise, generate the ebook, and publish in a relevant ebook category. Authors set their own prices and collect royalties between 35 and 70% of sales.

One of the first steps in the authoring process is to choose a relevant topic for a personal ebook. The topic should be of interest to a group of people, such as those in a related trade. Your background in medicine, the arts, or business, can be translated into an ebook. You have information such as problem solving, procedural steps, and thoughts, that can be quite valuable to others in the field. Young people, especially, are very interested in the knowledge you can share since so many have little formal training opportunities in the workplace today. Your own personal view while specific to you, can be a great help to those starting out in your field. Your published ebooks can be used to convey information which earns you royalties for each sale.

The authoring process starts with a chapter outline. You should quickly jot down 5 chapter titles that are relevant to your chosen topic. You can then expand your outline with 5 more topic ideas. This should only take a moment. The chapter outline will become the ebook. You add details to each outline chapter, perhaps 10 pages, or more, for each. Organize the chapters into a logical sequence, (beginning, intermediate, advanced, for example). Such an outline is quick and easy to create. When this step is complete, you just have to add detail pages for each outline chapter to create your ebook.

The minimum size for your ebook should be 50 to 60 pages of information. Each page will be about 500 words long and with practice, you should be able to write a page in less than 30 minutes. (A beginning author will likely require more time per page.) If your ebook subject is about your personal career, you should find it quite easy to write the required number of pages. Each chapter should contain perhaps 10 pages, although longer chapters are totally acceptable. Remember that 60 pages, in 5 or 6 chapters, is a minimum. Keep the quality of your writing high as you complete your ebook. Get help editing if you need to.

You should establish the retail selling price of your ebooks early in the authoring process. You can choose a desired price and write the ebook long enough to justify your target. Shorter ebooks will sell for less money. Authors should ensure that they keep both the quality and value of their ebooks high enough to prevent customer returns. By providing enough pages, you can increase your perceived value, and reduce your rate of returns.

Your titles should be priced reasonably. Short works are cheaper, longer ones more expensive. While there are no pricing rules, successful authors will ensure that readers get good value from each sale. Readers must perceive the value to be high enough for the cover price or they will ask for refunds. The above chart shows how long a typical ebook should be for each price shown. The royalties shown are the maximum Amazon values and are subject to a delivery fee between 25 and 80 cents per ebook sale.

Ebook Suggested Lengths

The Amazon 70% royalty rate only applies to ebooks that are listed exclusively with Amazon. As well, they must be priced between $2.99 and $9.99. Outside of these parameters, the Amazon royalty rate is 35%, with no delivery fee. Compared to traditional publishing, this is still very lucrative for authors. Generally, ebook authors should target the 70% royalty rate on Amazon. As shown above, a $2.99 ebook should have at least 60 pages and a $9.99 will be about 200 pages. If the ebook is this long, and the quality is excellent, the return rate should be minimal at each of the specified selling prices.

Authors should not that titles selling for $9.99 may encounter customer price resistance. The quality and quantity of information must be very high for such works. There are many authors who successfully sell at this level but they may be publishing in very specialized categories. Customers who are used to purchasing regular books for high prices may balk at paying high rates for electronic titles. Often an author will generate more sales by splitting a lengthy topic into two or more separate parts, each of which selling for a reduced amount. In this way, 200 pages covering a given topic may actually earn more revenue for the author as a related series rather than as a single sale.

Competition in the marketplace is another factor that will affect your success. Topics that are popular may be flooded with published works, by a great many authors. Study your topic before you devote much time to the creative process. You may find that narrowing your focus to a specific aspect of the topic will be more likely to generate sales. While your audience will be smaller, they will be more willing to purchase a focussed title, and you will be a very relevant authority figure. For example, your topic “Business Contract Proposal Responses” could generate far more sales than one covering “Business Procurement”. If in doubt, you should generally have a longer title so that readers can determine your topic at a glance.

Regular individuals are now joining the profitable world of self-publishing. They set their own selling prices, publish when, and where, they want. They are free from the threat of rejection by traditional agents or publishing companies. Royalty rates are excellent, ranging between 35% and 70%. At these amounts, authors can easily earn significant revenue from just a few titles selling each money. And of course, published ebooks will earn royalties month after month while in the marketplace.
