A migraine headache is a form of chronic disease that is characterized by recurring attacks. The pain is most of the times intense and pounding and usually is on one side of the head. There are cases that the pain is on both sides of the head but this is not an often symptom. Migraine headaches become worse by movement of the head and they are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extra sensitivity to bright light and loud sounds. A typical migraine crisis lasts from 4 hours to 3 days.
In the majority of the crisis there are migraine symptoms that last a couple of hours or even days. These symptoms can warn you about the attack so that you can take some protective measures. The migraine symptoms may include one or more of the following:
- Sudden desire to sleep
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Sudden feelings of depression
- Sudden feelings of happiness
- Desire for sweets or salty foods
There are also other cases where the migraine headaches are associated with aura. Aura may happen before or during the crisis. The migraine symptoms with aura include one or more of the following:
- Flashing lights
- Bright colors
- Blind spots
- Feeling that you have pins and needless on the mouth and nose, on the same side as the headache pain
- Not normal tastes and smells
In the more complicated forms of migraine headaches besides the above symptoms you may also get vertigo, double vision and paralysis on one side of the body.
To get relief from migraine headaches you can adopt some preventive measures to avoid or ease the pain. Migraines are hereditary, so if you have a predisposition to them it will be difficult to completely avoid the pain but you can take measures to make it milder. These measures include:
- Lie down on your bed and close all doors, windows and lights. Put a cold compress on your face and try to relax or sleep which is even better.
- Avoid caffeine and related products
- Eat your meals at your regular times and try not to skip any meal
- Take regular over the counter pain killers. If this does not work visit your doctor to give you medication which is specifically for the treatment of migraine headaches.
When you notice that the above methods do not work as expected and the pain becomes worse and more frequent then you should definitely visit your doctor and explain the situation. Your doctor will make the necessary tests and give you the appropriate treatment. If you do not take any measures to fight migraine headaches, be sure that the pain will not go away alone.
