Your Antique Earrings Collection

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 1

Collecting antique jewelry is a hobby that fills us with more questions than we get answers for. Knowing whether a piece is "real" is a often a dilemma. Knowing if it is a good price is often more of a dilemma.

As you grow as a collector, your knowledge and experience grows and you start to recognize a good deal when you see one. But sometimes that feeling eludes us, even for experienced collectors.

When you are shopping from an antiques dealer, always ask if this is their best price. Often a dealer expects this bargaining and inflates their price accordingly. If the price is fixed, the dealer will let you know. But it never hurts to ask.

Always examine your potential purchase carefully. Be respectful and thorough. Ask about its price, its history, the stones, the metal. Check for any flaws, scratches, loose stones, engravings, hallmarks, etc. Hold it up to the light and examine the stones (even if you're not really sure what you are looking for). Take a magnifying glass with you for a closer look.

Antique earrings can look spectacular. Varying styles include: clip-on, screw-back, pierced, stud, hoop, sleeper, chandelier, filigree, millefiori, diamond, pearl, opal, rhinestone, topaz, turquoise, garnet, ruby, and more.

You can make a display of your antique earrings collection by getting a glass-front display case. This way your earrings are kept in a secure manner, not rattling around together in a jewelry box. Each is held safely and securely in its own position. You can borrow from your display case when you want to wear an item.

Another fascinating way to display your antique earrings is to use them as Christmas tree decorations. Dangle earrings are perfect for hanging on the tree, and are great conversation starters.

Remember to always insure your collection if it is particularly valuable.
