Yowamushi Pedal follows the journey of Sakamichi Onoda, an small sized otaku who cycles long distance regularly to his favorite hangout, Akihabara for reasons we all can imagine. The reason he was singled out is because he rode up a steep hill on a 'mamachari' or a European city bike, while singing.
As he had been riding regularly on his mamachari for long distance, and in most cases, in a rush, he has developed skills that made him stand out. He is said to have a very high cadence.
Follow his journey as he enters the Sohoku High School Cycling team and find out how far he can go in the competitive world of bicycle racing.

Animes are a great way to discover great Japanese bands
From the Sohoku High Bicycle Club
Sakamichi Onoda: An otaku who is surprisingly good at climbing slopes on his less than efficient bike. Throughout the anime, he will evolve and grow the most as he discovers the joy of racing on his road racer.
Shunsuke Imaizumi: A freshman in Sohoku High. He has been in the bicycle racing scene since elementary school and aims to become the fastest cyclist in the world. Imaizumi sees Kinjou as his target and wants to become the ace of the team. He is the first to recognize Onoda's capabilities and is very optimistic about Onoda's possible progress in road racing.
Shoukichi Naruko: A freshman in Sohoku High, and a sprinter. He is very competitive and is constantly trying to beat Imaizumi as well as his mentor, Tadokoro. Naruko is very friendly towards Onoda and is constantly supporting Onoda.
Shingo Kinjou: The captain and the ace of Sohoku High's bicycle club. He is very thoughtful although he looks stern. Kinjou recognizes Imaizumi's skills and wishes to train and develop his skills.
Yuusuke Makishima: A 3rd year student in Sohoko bicycle club, and a climber. He is nicknamed the 'peak spider' and his signature move involves dancing excessively on his bicycle as he climbs. Makishima mentors Onoda at the beginning, and trusts in Onoda's skills.
Jin Tadokoro: A 3rd year student in Sohoko bicycle club, and a sprinter. Tadokoro mentors Naruko and constantly challenges him.
I will try to keep the spoilers to the minimum in this review.
Currently at episode 37, the anime is moving along with great pace. Each episode covers sufficient plot progression, mixed with voice overs as the characters analyse each other's intention in the race.
Since this is an anime about bicycle racing, that's about the only thing that the characters do most of the time. Most of the action, self-dialogue and character interactions occur while the players are on their bicycles. I found this very amusing at first.
However, because I have a soft spot for sport anime and the spirit these animes portray, I found it generally acceptable.
Following the introduction of the main character, Onoda, there have been several informal races and trainings that the characters have gone through. The Sohoku team went through two rounds of selection, the first round was to select and test the new bicycle club members, and the second round was to select official representatives for their Inter-high games.
Overall, Yowamushi Pedal is interesting because the sport that it focuses on, bicycle racing, is a sport that is rarely touched on in the anime scene. I feel that this is one of the main reason why this series is rather refreshing.
As for the plot, Yowamushi Pedal has a rather predictable plot with an average main character who is being portrayed as a 'hero' with the ability to overcome all odds despite the obvious lack of training he has been through.
This anime series features some very interesting (albeit minor) characters, many of whom are opponents of the Sohoku team. Watch out of a pretty boy who talks to his chest muscles, a disgusting yet genius strategist who makes weird sounds with his teeth, and many more to come.
