England and France are usually among the top sides in the FIFA World Cups and Euro Championships. They have met numerous times in those cups, and have also played a number of other international games. These are the matches they have played in the European Championships and World Cup.

1964 European Championship Games

England's first notable games against France were a couple of European Championship qualifying matches. They played the first leg at Wembley, which ended 1 - 1. As such, France had the advantage for the return fixture at the Parc des Princess. In that match England had a strong team that included Greaves, Moore and Charlton. However, France was two goals up at half-time, and they further extended their lead after the interval to make the final score 5 - 2. The fixture's aggregate score was 6 - 3.

1966 FIFA World Cup

England played France in the 1966 World Cup group stages. After a draw against Uruguay in the opening game, they needed to beat France to finish top of the table. During the first half, Hunt opened the scoring after Charlton's shot from within the box deflected off the post. He slotted the ball into the net from close range after the ball rebounded off the post. In the second half, Hunt extended England's lead after heading home a cross from the right. That made it England 2 - France 0, and the victory ensured they topped the group.

1982 FIFA World Cup

England played France in their first game of the 1982 FIFA World Cup. They went in front within the first minute, but France later equalized. However, England regained the lead after Francis crossed the ball to Robson to head home the second. A third England goal ensured a 3 - 1 victory. It was one of their wins in the group stage that got them to the second round.

European Championship in Sweden

England took on France in the Euro '92 group stage. With no goals it was not a classic encounter. England went close when Pearce struck a great free-kick from some distance that rebounded off the crossbar and bounced out from the goal-line. The game ended 0 - 0, and without the extra points England crashed out in the first round.

European Championship in Portugal

England were again in the same group as France in UEFA's European Championship. Both teams had great players with Zidane, Henry, Beckham and Rooney on the field. England went in front when Lampard headed home the first goal from Beckham's free-kick. France's goalkeeper also saved a penalty.

The game remained 1 - 0 until the last minutes. Zidane scored a great free-kick from outside the box to equalize for France. The referee gave a late penalty when Henry went down in England's box, and Zidane scored from the spot to make it 2 - 1. However, England still made it to the quarter finals with victories in their next couple of games.

European Championship in Ukraine

The most recent game between the teams came at Euro 2012, once more in the group stages. The English went a goal up in the first half, but France later equalized. The match ended 1 - 1, and both teams finished in the top two.

Aside from those games,  the teams have played a variety of other international fixtures[1]. With 16 victories France have won most of the matches, but only one of those wins was in the European Championship and World Cup games. With two victories England have the better head-to-head record in the World Cup and European Championship finals.
