How much money does an interior designer make - Job outlook for interior designers

By | Nov 30, 2011 | 2 Comments | Rating: 1

An interior designer has a job that allows them to cash in on their eye for detail and knack for artistic flair.

An interior designers salary is really all over the board; they can be anywhere from $20,000 per year to hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

How to get your career started

Here are some other things that will make a difference in how much money an interior designer makes:

Types of clients–the kinds of clients that you work with to help out with their interior design choices is going to make a big difference in the size of your paycheck.

For example, if you tend to work with very wealthy clients, it is going to be likely that your own paycheck will be much higher than the average interior designer salary.

If you work with a wealthy clientele last, they are likely going to be more willing to pay more for counsel  when it comes to decorating the inside of their upscale homes.

Whether you work for yourself or someone else–a big part of what decides your interior design salary is going to be whether you are in business for yourself, or whether you are doing contracted work through another person's business.

When you are your own boss, you get to decide the rate that you charge to advise people in their interior design.

When you work for someone else, someone else is deciding the rate that you will charge for your services, and they are likely also taking a portion of your fees as overhead for working under their business front.

For this reason, if you are interested in going into this industry for a career and you have a true talent at what you were doing, it may be a good idea to consider starting your own interior design business.

Because the overhead can be relatively inexpensive, and you do not need a lot of real estate to make it happen (most of the work happens in other people's homes and you really just need a small consulting space, at the most), you can boost your interior design pay check by going into business for yourself.

How much experience you have–if you have a lot of experience as an interior designer, you may find that people are very interested in your services and that you don't have a hard time keeping regular business accounts.

If you combine your experience with a savvy business sense, you may find that you are able to generate a lot of referrals, which can greatly boost your interior designer earnings.

  Job outlook for interior designers

Currently, there are still some professionals who are doing very well in this field.

However, when the economy took a downward turn, interior design jobs went into a bit of a slump because it is such an optional service.

When people started cutting back on spending, having an interior designer come into a home in order to tell you what colors would look best and how to create the healthiest feng shui was temporarily put on the back burner.

Eventually, in the near future, interior design jobs should make a comeback.

I think that the crux of what you have to say about interior designing is when you state that "When people started cutting back on spending, having an interior designer come into a home in order to tell you what colors would look best and how to create the healthiest feng shui was temporarily put on the back burner." I think with the given environment and the stretch for money in the future, interior design may never be what it used to be. I liked the article. Thanks.
