Acid reflux disease is a common digestive problem that is difficult to manage and control using conventional strategies.  Some conventional strategies try to neutralize the stomach acid with anti-acids or avoid the consumption of acidic foods like the tomatoes and oranges.  Conventional approaches do not work very well, and they often lead to deficiency in some essential nutrients.  A more effective alternative is to get rid of acid reflux disease with aloe vera juice and two fruit enzymes, papain and bromelain.  Papain is a papaya enzyme, and bromelain is a pineapple enzyme.

Acid Reflux Disease

Acid reflux disease is characterized by a retrograde flow of some of the stomach contents into the esophagus. This content is acidic, and it can irritate and erode the lining of the esophagus.  This often results in a burning sensation in the chest.  If this sensation is a mild form of the acid reflux disease and it occurs infrequently, then it is called a heart burn.  If it is severe, then it is called a gastrointestinal esophageal acid reflux disease (GERD). In some cases, this assault on the esophagus leads to the ulceration and inflammation of the affected areas. This extreme case is called erosive esophagitis.  Some people do not categorize this digestive problem. They simply refer to any of them as GERD.  Fortunately, you can get rid of these acid-induced problems with aloe Vera juice and fruit enzymes, irrespective of what you call them.

Treatment of Acid Reflux Disease

Treatment of this digestive problem with aloe vera and fruit enzymes is nutritional and natural. An important attribute of these natural remedies is that they support healthy digestion.  Healthy digestion is pivotal for preventing this digestive disorder.

These natural remedies are convenient to use, and they are often more cost-effective than the conventional remedies.  The conventional approach of avoiding acidic foods and foods that aggravate the reflux problem often prevents you from eating many healthy foods, and you may end up with nutritional deficiencies.  It may also prevent you from enjoying your favorite foods.  Worst of all, you can only get temporary relief by avoiding foods that aggravate this digestive disorder.

The conventional approach of neutralizing the stomach acid may impair your digestion and create more problems for you.  Adequate levels of acid in the stomach are necessary for healthy digestion.  The problem with acid reflux disease is that the acid from the stomach is not confined to the stomach. It spills over into the esophagus and causes problems because the sphincter valve is working properly to prevent the acid from refluxing into the esophagus. It is believed that there is a link between poor food digestion and the sphincter valve patency. Consequently, you would not have the reflux problem if your food is properly digested and if the sphincter valve is functionally intact.  The enzyme treatment prevents the acid reflux and supports your digestion without neutralizing the acid. The mechanism for this health benefit is not properly understood, but it is a change that can improve your quality of life.

Get Rid of Acid Reflux Disease with Aloe Vera

You can get rid of acid reflux disease with aloe vera by taking aloe vera juice or aloe vera gel.  Aloe vera is a plant with several thousand years of medicinal history.  The medicinal value of this herb was recognized and appreciated over two thousand years ago in ancient Greece by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine and the originator of the Hippocratic Oath.  He considered aloe vera a critical component of his pharmaceutical arsenal for treating various types of gastrointestinal maladies.

The medicinal merits of aloe vera has been time-tested and it is sound.   Aloe vera is particularly effective for healing acid reflux problems that involve the erosion of the esophageal lining.  It brings soothing and healing to the injured and ulcerated areas of the esophagus in a similar way as it does for burns and injuries to the skin.  This healing effect is attributed to a compound in aloe vera called glycoprotein.  Glycoprotein speeds up wound healing and stops inflammation.

Papaya and Papaya Enzyme

Papaya is a super fruit with numerous health benefits. These benefits range from support of the digestive system to the prevention of type 2 diabetes, and from preventing coronary heart disease to fighting cancer. This super fruit can be eaten to prevent or get rid of acid reflux disease.  The ability of papaya to get rid of GERD is attributed largely to the papaya enzyme, papain.   When you eat the fruit you get the full benefits of this super fruit; whereas, when you take papaya enzyme you get rid of the GERD but the nutritional and health benefits become limited.

Papaya enzyme is an interesting fruit enzyme because it is able to withstand the hostile environment in the stomach. The stomach is an environment that contains hydrochloric acid which is one of the agents that your stomach uses to breakdown foods that you consume. Hydrochloric acid will break down proteins or denature them (change their structure and terminate their functional activities). Enzymes are proteins, yet, papaya enzyme can maintain its functional integrity in the stomach.

Many people do not assign health benefits to ingested food enzymes because they conclude that stomach acid and other digestive juices  will destroy the enzymes.  Although this contention is largely true, it is a mistake to generalize that all enzymes and proteins are destroyed in the stomach.  Papain, a proteolytic enzyme, is a clear example that contradicts this conclusion.  If one knows which enzymes can survive the harsh environment of the stomach, then the person can use the proper food enzymes to improve his/her health.

Pineapple and Bromelain

The pineapple enzyme, bromelain, is another fruit enzyme, which can survive the environment in the stomach and help you to get rid of acid reflux disease. Some people prefer to use the pineapple enzyme instead of eating the pineapple, an acidic fruit.  The idea of introducing more acid to your system when you are having problems with stomach acid is unappealing to many people.   The mechanism of action of bromelain is not fully understood.  Like the effects of papain, the mechanism of action of bromelain may be related to its effect of supporting food digestion and reducing inflammation.

Natural Remedy

Aloe vera and the fruit enzymes resolve the reflux problem naturally by tackling the root cause of the problem, poor digestion. The conventional remedies merely control acidity, a palliative measure.  It is not surprising that aloe vera and the fruit enzymes provide a better solution to this digestive problem.  The mechanism for the therapeutic effects of these natural remedies needs to be fully unraveled.  Meanwhile, you can get relief from GERD and heartburn with aloe vera and papain.

This is a great article. I have used aloe vera for skin conditions, but didn't know you could take it internally.

Thank you, HLesley, for reading my article. Aloe vera is an amazing plant with an incredible number of health benefits. This ancient herb always makes me wonder about the health benefits we have lost by the extinction of numerous other ancient herbs.
