An Open Letter to Washington

A Primary Obligation

If you are of the opinion that your primary obligation is to your constituents and then to your state and that the welfare of the nation is secondary, not only to those honorable citizens you have been allowed to represent but to all other interests, I must ask, why you have taken a seat in Congress?

In our short history, honorable men of differing opinions have found common ground to sustain and nurture the beliefs of our Constitution. Honorable men of courage and wisdom, possessed of a singular belief that our Republic will endure, transcended personal political need and political desire. Men, not always right in their actions, not always valid in their beliefs, worked together in union with those of opposing views and beliefs, to lead our nation, to continually build upon the foundation which is our National Constitution. Make no mistake, these were not gods, they were men and as men do in the best of circumstances, there were mistakes made creating times of tribulation, inequality and injustice. This Nation endured because even in trying times, there existed a recognition for change, a simple realization that whatever must be done, it must be done for the citizens of the Nation to insure the continuation of our Democratic Republic.

I am of the opinion, that those who have defined our National political heritage, never in their darkest hours, imagined a state of affairs as we have come upon in this hour. Understand, that our current political process is not politics as usual. The process is beyond what most Americans comprehend. Beyond comprehension because most Americans can never, will never believe, the democratic process has been violated in such a way that our Nation will be changed fundamentally.

and I'm of the opinion

I am of the opinion, that those who have defined our National political heritage, never in their darkest hours, imagined a state of affairs as we have come upon in this hour. Understand, that our current political process is not politics as usual. The process is beyond what most Americans comprehend. Beyond comprehension because most Americans can never, will never believe, the democratic process has been violated in such a way that our Nation will be changed fundamentally.

There are ominous forces that have breached our national horizon and threaten our Nation and our current political process is ill equipped to weather the storm. No longer can you, who have been elected to sustain our welfare be expected to do so for your loyalty and ability is suspect. There exists on your part, no lack of courage, no lack of will, for you are, essentially, no different than those who sat in the halls of Congress before your arrival. You are possessive however, of a different vision.

A perverse vision

A perverse vision that is self serving regarding the retention of power, even at the expense of those you are elected to serve. I and my fellow Americans have become secondary in nature. Secondary to the forces of power, manipulation, greed and corruption that coalesce to keep us divided. You allow division along political ideologies, economic status and racial chasm's and continually threaten us with fear; fear of war, fear of immigration, fear of economic instability, fear of our future, and even fear of each other.

No longer do you believe our Nation is of, by and for the people. Instead, the Nation is of, by and for, your given political party or personal agenda. This is, once again, not politics as usual. In your failure to understand and meet the needs of the citizens of this nation, you have brought upon the American people this perfect storm from which we will emerge for the worse.

I do not believe that all of you harbor hidden agendas, in fact I believe that most of you who set in the very same seats of some of the most revered names in American Political history, are at heart, good people with the best of intentions. I do not believe you lack wisdom to understand certain truths nor do I doubt you have the courage to speak out. There must be among you who hold seats in Congress, names that are yet to be revered in days yet to come.

I can not help but wonder if you will fail us.
