Has the Free Market Changed China?

This paper examines the political liberalization that has occurred in China since the end of the Cultural Revolution and the death of Chairman Mao. It attempts to explain the reasoning behind this political liberalization linking them to the economic reforms during the Post-Mao era in China. It achieves this by first examining the specific instances of Chinese economic reforms then establishing links between these economic reforms and political reforms. These specific instances include agricultural and land reforms, changes in political thought brought about through a reinvention of the legal system, industrial reform, decentralization of authority, and the development of an "Open Door" economic policy. In the process of establishing these links, it shows how consequences of the economic reforms issued by the central government in fact led to political reform as well as calls for more reform in addition to a decrease in the authority of the Chinese central government.
