The Blue-Cheeked Amazon - Characteristics

Parrots belonging to the genus Amazona are of medium size and native to the New World. Most are predominantly green. Many have become very popular as pets because their remarkable ability to mimic. The blue-cheeked Amazon has bright blue cheeks. It is listed as 'near threatened' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Because of its restricted range and the low density of its population, deforestation is of major concern. The bird is also trapped for the pet trade and for food.

Conure Bleeding Syndrome in Birds

Conure Bleeding Syndrome affects some conure species more than others. Baby birds are more often victims of the disease but older birds can contract the disease if they come under extreme stress. Symptoms include weakness and drowsiness in the early stages. This will be followed by recurrent episodes of internal and external bleeding. There may be difficulty in breathing accompanied by diarrhoea and excessive urination. Early treatment generally results in full recovery.
