With the release of Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, people are already rushing to contrast it with the classic 1990 film. Naturally, there's no way the recent Michael Bay film could possibly compare to the original, right? Well, in My Unpopular Opinion, I will compare the two and show that they are a lot closer in quality than you think.

Christina, Hermaphrodite Queen of Sweden?

The mannish 17th century queen of Sweden, Christina, was anomolous in her day. Preferring men's clothing, engaging in manly pursuits, and a scholar, she also abdicated to pursue an interest in Catholicism (illegal in Sweden then). Her androgynous appearance, attachments to at least one woman, and failed "love" interests in men have led many to believe she may have been a hermaphrodite.

The Entity

In a famous case of alleged paranormal activity, The Entity Case, one key element of the story is missing, and that is a biography about the subject herself, Doris Bither. Although the case itself is well documented--based upon the reported histrionics--details of Ms. Bither's life are sketchy at best.

Presumed Serial Poisoner, Mary Ann Cotton

A poor working-class widow, Mary Ann Cotton has passed into history as a vicious serial poisoner, mercilessly killing her loved ones for financial gain.  She was vilified in the press most likely because of her station in life (as were more modern judicial victims, the early 1900s' Martha Rendell and the 1980s' Lindy Chamberlain of "the dingo ate my baby" infamy). Mary Ann's story, however, upon closer inspection may prove to be completely false; her execution may in fact have been one of history's more shameful miscarriages of justice.

This is a series that spans 100 years of the romance of music and the reality of history in a mixture of Americana that takes the reader down memory lane into a mindscape of feelings and thoughts. This segment travels between 1912 and 1929 and I believe is a trip worth taking. You may recall times and tunes that you thought were lost forever. Enjoy!
