Airship Disasters - the R101 and Hindenburg

The airship industry is probably the only industry to die in modern times because of disasters, although it experienced only two, the R101 and the Hindenberg, which had a combined death-toll of less than 100. There have been much worse disasters, on land, at sea and in the air, but none has brought to such an abrupt halt the industry from which it evolved. Perhaps the seeds of disaster lay not in its flying machines, but in the industry itself, with its vulnerable technology resting upon politics.
