Winter can be one of the hardest times of year to find the motivation to get outside and get some exercise. The Chantecler Chicken - Characteristics

The Chantecler is Canada's only native poultry breed. It has been specially developed to cope with the freezing temperatures. Its small comb and tiny wattles ensures it does not normally get frostbitten. It is a heavy, fleshy bird and also a good layer. It is friendly and quiet. Although it has some many good qualities, it is not particularly widespread and the American Livestock Breed Conservancy lists the status of the Chantecler as critical.

The Appenzeller Chicken - Characteristics

The Appenzeller chicken is Switzerland's national chicken breed. There are two varieties - the Spitzhauben and the Barthuhner. 'Spitzhauben' means 'pointed hood'. This type has a forward pointing crest and V-shaped comb. 'Barthuhner' means 'bearded hen' and has a rose comb and no crest. Although it is quite a good layer, it is kept mainly as an exhibition bird. The Swiss Association for the preservation of national breeds is Pro Specie Rara. Pro Specie Rara and the Appenzeller Hen Club have set up an emergency program in an endeavour to prevent the demise of yet another lovely chicken breed.

The Sicilian Buttercup lays only a few small eggs, it isn't particularly friendly, it is fidgety and prone to flying out of its yard and into nearby trees and it is nervous and skittish. Poultry fanciers persevere with the Sicilian Buttercup because of its beautiful appearance and its unique comb which sits on its head like a crown bearing a number of points round the edge. It is purely an ornamental bird.
