Halloween and Gothic themed gardens draw on macabre themes, not only for the plants used, but also in the animals that the garden attracts and even in the decorations that the gardener incorporates into the garden.
Ever since the first prisoner came to Alcatraz Island in 1861, men and women have been looking for an escape from the island. And while no one ever got away from the military or the law stationed on the notorious island located in San Francisco bay, some residents of the island found another form of escape through planting gardens. Most of these gardens fell into disuse once the prison closed in 1963. More recently, the State Parks System has reclaimed the gardens of Alcatraz. In the process, parks volunteers have found hybrid rose varieties that were previously thought extinct.
Since the 13th century, farmers near present-day Mexico City have built raised beds directly into lake Xochimilco in order to practice intensive farming. These gardens, known as chinampas, have been a UN World Heritage Site since the late 1980's. But that status and the very existence of the chinampas are in danger thanks to pollution and urban expansion.
