While researching the Zika virus, I discovered the safest, most effective ways to eradicate disease-carrying mosquitoes. Turns out: used coffee grounds sprinkled over stagnant water sources (like bromeliad flowers or leaves) acts as a larvicide and as a deterrent to egg-laying mosquitoes. If you live in a Zika-endemic area, I highly recommend Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis serotype israelensis). Two other ways I have remained bite-free: a spray bottle of 70 percent rubbing alcohol and my trusty sidekick, Editor Cat.
