Should I Buy a Dyson Desk Fan (AM01) 10 inch or 12 inch?
Are you unsure whether to buy the Dyson AM01 10 inch or AM01 12 inch? If so, then this objective & brief comparison and overview guide -- of the two versions of the AM01 -- which highlights both their similarities and difference among specifications, aspects and price -- should give you a much clearer view: i) as to what each one can offer you as well as ii) which one provides you with the best overall value with respect to its corresponding price tag.
Dimensions: From the two versions of the AM01 - the most obvious and notable difference between them is their size (where the 10"' & 12" measures the hoop).
AM01 10 inch: Height 19.53 x Width - 12.01 x Depth - 5.98 inches. Cord: 5.9 ft.
AM01 12 inch: Height 21.54 x Width - 14.02 x Depth - 5.98 inches. Cord: 5.9 ft.
So in this aspect, all you should really be concerned with is the amount of space it will take up on your desk -- where obviously the 12 inch version is a fair bit bigger than the 10 inch.

Design: as both models are based on the exact same design -- there is pretty much no difference (as seen from the respective images of both version - 12" above and 10" below). The only real option you have in this regard is the colour (where they are available in: Silver/Iron, Iron/Blue, Silver/White etc. - note: that the cord colour is grey on all models, so to us the Silver/Iron version is most appealing). In all, it is beautiful looking piece of kit - especially suited to an office & working type environment - it just makes the space seem more open & less cluttered (not to mention it is a pretty cool talking point - no pun intended there).
The AM01 (10 inch)
Performance: This is where the main difference occurs between the two models. firstly, though to go everything that is identical -- they oscillate on the same 90 degree axis as well as the 10 degrees on the 'touch-tilt' feature (so you can angle the optimal trajectory of the air flow). Moreover, the speed settings is 'fully variable' on both -- through its 'Dimmer-switch control' located at the base (they aren't like the usual standard 'bladed' fan where you get an option of 3 to 5 -- with the AM01, you can tune it precisely to your personal cooling preferences).
The benefits of using Dyson's air multiplier technology are obviously shared as well -- where they are safe to be used around curious children (as there are no fast spinning blades), they are also super easy to clean (as no grill is required or installed). But, the biggest distinguishing factor between Dyson air multipliers and that of standard bladed fans -- is the quality of the super smooth & comforting air flow that the AM01 produces in comparison to the buffeted & choppy (irritating to the skin) air flow produced by bladed fans.
The only real difference between the versions... is the power of cooling & air flow that the two models can produce (through the processes of inducement and entrainment) -- the 10 inch: amplifies 5.28 gallons of air per second by up to 15 times and the 12 inch: amplifies 7.13 gallons of air per second by up to 15 times. The 12 inch is hence obviously the best Dyson desk fan for cooling -- and you will also find that it is a bit quieter in operation as well due to the recent update where it has undertaken acoustic dampening (reducing noise levels and improving sound quality).
Both versions of the AM01 are of course backed by the same two year warranty (which is double the industry standard on fans) for both parts and labour from the date of purchase. Moreover, with regards to "what's in the box" -- you are provided with an "operations manual", "loop amplifier" and "base" (reminds me very much like opening up a new Apple product, in terms of looks and how well and neatly assembled everything is).
Which will you buy -- the AM01 10" or 12"?
If you are after the model that is best at 'cooling', then you should clearly opt for the 12 inch version -- but the main factor that will mainly hinder you on 'which to get' will be the difference in price. Which is usually around $30 to $50 (with the best price Dyson fans being found at Amazon usually, due to the third parties selling through them) and to me -- the 12 inch is in fact actually worth that bit extra -- as when it comes to the summer months you will definitely appreciate that extra bit of cooling power when you are busy working on a task in hand.
This being said, if you are faced with a difference of $100 (with the AM01 12 inch being the model that is more expensive, note: it is known that you can actually come across scenarios where you find the 12 inch model cheaper than the 10 inch) -- I would probably then go for the cheaper 10 inch model. The best thing to do is check them out -- at a local store that has them stocked -- then ask to give them a test run and see which one you prefer.
