iHeartRadio is a free app that lets you listen to thousands of live radio stations or create your own personalized stations based on your favorite artists, songs or genres. All stations are shown by categories like pop, hip-hop, country, talk, rock and many more. Once a station is created, the app will mix in other similar artists from that genre or era.

However, if you do not want to hear more of a particular random artist or song mixed in, you can give it the thumbs down and iHeart will adjust to that preference. It is a learning app and you can teach it with thumbs up or thumbs down.

While I still use Pandora, I like iHeart Radio because there are no free monthly limits. Pandora has a set limit of 40 free hours of listening per month.

In my opinion, the best features of the app are the following:

App Features:

• Access streaming music from an endless source of options

• Create custom stations for any mood manually or automatically generated by the app

• On-demand episodes from popular shows in news, sports, finance, comedy and entertainment

However, there are some things you need to be aware of if you are going to be using this streaming app. First of all, I have found it to drain my battery on my iPhone much faster if I use it for a couple of hours during the day. Second, if you have a monthly data limit on your cell plan, you probably will not want to stream to often using the cellular data option on your mobile device.

While streaming music is much less data than streaming video, it adds up if you are listening for hours each day. The best option is to connect via wi-fi if that is available in your office. Definitely use that option if streaming from home.

Once you have made the decision to download and use the app, the following information may assist you.

Installation and Registration

To get started, download the free app from the iTunes store or Google Play. After installing on your mobile device, open the app and you will be prompted to create an account. Do not let this discourage you because it is harmless. Just enter an email address and password and create.

The application will give you an option to link to your Facebook account if you do not feel like going through the registration process and confirming your email address. Personally, I do not like to mix Facebook in with all of my other online activities so I avoid that option.

Once registered, you are taken to the iHeart home screen. In order access all of the features on this screen you have to tap the Nav icon in the upper left-hand corner.  There you will see several menu options.

  • Home – Returns you to the Home screen of the app. If you ever feel like you are lost in the app, click Home and start over again
  • Live Radio – Access live radio stations
  • Perfect for – Select a music genre to meet your mood or activity
  • Create station – Create a personalized station of your favorite music or artists
  • Talk – Access talk radio stations and other radio shows
  • More – Access an alarm, sleep timer, favorites list and settings for the app

The iHeartRADIO app is great for streaming live radio stations  or listening to customized music. However, you should be cautious if you are on a restricted data plan or you are concerned about battery life on your mobile device. My preferred option for using this app is to plug it into my home stereo and let it stream through my home wi-fi network at home.

The performance is flawless and the quality is excellent over a quality output device. Most stereo receivers have adapters you can buy to connect mobile devices to play through the receiver and speakers, or you can purchase a more mobile output device to listen to your music. Either way, you will not be disappointed with this app. Radio has always been free, but now you can have a measure of control over what you hear.
