Difference Between the Roomba 650 & 770

A common problem amongst buyers of a new iRobot Roomba is figuring out which one offers them the best overall value for money -- and if you are specifically weighing up whether to get the Roomba '650' or the more advanced Roomba '770' and whether the latter is worth the difference in price, then you are in the right place. Below, is a comparison account - '650 Vs 770' - that highlights both their differences as well as their similarities across sepcifications & features, helping you to determine which is the right model for your cleaning needs & preferences.

iRobot Roomba 650 Vs iRobot Roomba 770

Cleaning Mechanism

Roomba 650: '3 Stage Cleaning with AeroVac Series 1' | Adjusting Clean

Roomba 770: '3 Stage Cleaning with AeroVac Series 2' | Adjusting Clean | Clean Edge |

Both are fitted with an improved brush design, advanced cleaner head (that self-adjusts to different floor types) as well as a 3-stage cleaning mechanism -- however the 770 is fitted with the more advanced AeroVac Series 2 technology (which is basically more vigorous & sucks up more dirt & debris than the series 1, basically allows for an even better finish) and is also fitted with a special edge cleaner brush to allowing for a better & more complete clean (reaching right up to side skirtings - through following walls) of dirt, debris & dust. They are both suited to all floor types & are specifically designed to deal with pet hair & fluff as well as being produced with a slim profile allowing them to easily get under furniture & curtains too (if they do hit an obstacle they protect it through a polymer bumper to prevent any scuff markings).

Navigation System

Roomba 650: iAdapt Responsive Cleaning Technology | 1 Automatic Virtual Walls

Roomba 770:  iAdapt Responsive Cleaning Technology | 2 Automatic Virtual Walls

The Roomba vacuums use a GPS like system that they use to navigate around your floor - conjuring up a cleaning map, so they know where their precise location is, where they have cleaned & what areas need to be cleaned (and cleaned again). Moreover, they also know what places to avoid i.e obstacles & drop offs (e.g. chair legs & stair ways) & if it gets tangled with cords & tassels it has a 'shake off' technology to set itself free. You are also provided with virtual walls to set up an enclosed perimeter if you only want to the roomba do carry out a certain section of the house (you get an extra one with the 770).

Fitted Technology

Roomba 650: Dirt Detect with Concentrated Cleaning (Series 1)

Roomba 770: Dirt Detect with Concentrated & Persistent Cleaning (Series 2)

They incorporate a unique intelligence of identifying particular dirty patches/areas & will perform a concentrated clean (i.e a more intense clean for the 650), but with the 770 not only does it perform the 'concentrated clean' but (because it has the dirt detect Series 2) it will go over that patch repeatedly (like you would do with a standard vacuum cleaner, go over the area back & forth) performing a 'persistent clean' until its up to a decent finish.

Battery Life & Charging

Roomba 650: Run time - 50 - 60 mins before returning to the dock.

Roomba 770: Run time - 70 mins before returning to the dock.

With regards to the run time, the 770 runs just over the hour & the 650 just under -- both return to their docking station (Home Base) to recharge & once charged it will go on back to complete the job in hand -- saving you the hassle of having to constantly taking it to get charged.

Filtration System

Roomba 650: AeroVac Filter

Roomba 770: Dual HEPA Filter

There is also a slightly different filter system between the two robotic vacuums -- the 770 is fitted with a more concentrated (High efficient particulate air) filter that basically captures more allergens & dust from being expelled into the air whilst vacuuming (as small as 0.3 microns), allowing for healthier & cleaner air (note: a HEPA filter mechanism is especially recommended for those who are either asthmatic or an allergy sufferer).

Practical Features & Specifications

Roomba 650: Dimensions: Height 8.0 cm x Diameter 35cm | Weight 6.4 kgs | Bin Capacity 0.22 litres |

Roomba 770: Remote Control | Bin Indicator |Dimensions: Height 8.0 cm x Diameter 35 cm | Weight: 6.3 kgs | Bin Capacity: 0.26 litres

One of the best features about the Roomba series is the scheduling system, where you can set up the precise times during the week when you want it to go about cleaning your house (even when you aren't there e.g. at work). In terms of the noise level, they aren't silent but by no means are they loud -  they are at a similar level to a conversation you would have in a restaurant around 45-50 dB.

The 770 does come with a extra few features that the 650 doesn't such as the remote control (where you basically can change the settings without even having to get from the sofa) and the bin indicator to let you know when its full hence don't need to second guess it (as well as it being able to actually store more dirt & debris in there).

Further Information

With regards to the warranty on offer for the two Roomba vacuums, you get a 1 year guarantee covering the actual vacuum & its components and then a six month one covering the battery.

Conclusion -- Which iRobot Roomba Should You Buy -- the 650 or 770?

Both are excellent cleaning machines (as attested to through their very positive reviews) but clearly there is a different in standard -- the 770 is a step up from the 650, however it is up to you whether all the extra benefits it has over the 650 is worth the extra $130-150? In my mind it is an obvious 'yes' , you do get a fair bit for your money - where not only are you getting a 'better cleaning machine' (i.e it is more powerful, runs longer, better in-built equipment & technology) you also get a few extra practical features too.
