Found a Set of Rims and Tires For Sale? What To Consider

The Guide To Finding the Right Rims and Tires For Your Vehicle

A great way to instantly improve the look of your car is to get new rims and tires. Nice wheels instantly add flash to any car, but don’t be fooled into thinking that all new rims and tires are the same. There are many different kinds, and they serve different purposes.

You can’t just grab the first ones you see— do you need those 17-inch rims and tires for sale or do you need a different size? Do you want your rims chrome plated and polished or is a plastic wheel simulator okay? Aside from your personal style preferences and the type of car you own, multiple other factors must be taken into consideration. This includes where you live and what kind of activities you use your vehicle for.

For example, there are tires for different types of weather. Winter tires are meant to withstand ice and snow because they consist of a special rubber compound that conforms to the road in such conditions. Meanwhile, summer tires are lighter and meant for more mild climates, or those that are exposed to more heat than cold. The most common type of tire is the all season tire, however, and these are designed to be used in all kinds of conditions (keep in mind though that they will function in all conditions, but will not perform as well as tires meant specifically for those conditions).

Then there are off road tires, which are very heavy but designed to allow mud and dirt to loosen and be repelled. Be aware, however, that these tires are not found in all auto supply stores, and they can also be expensive. Off road wheels cannot go as fast as others, and some may not even be authorized for use on paved, public roads. Always take every factor into consideration when shopping.

Although not always made specifically for types of weather, there are also many different types of rims. Pressed steel rims, for instance, are often cheaper (in initial cost) when compared to other rims for sale, and they are very durable.

However, pressed steel rims also weigh a lot more than other rims, are not corrosion-resistant and can be unattractive to look at. On the other hand, steel or composite rims are very light in weight and look unique in design. Of course, they are also priced a lot higher because of production costs. For comparison, single piece cast aluminum is the most common rim type for sale in the market, and it is fairly easy to find 22-inch rims and tires for sale.

Not only is it reasonably priced and easy to maintain, but also it is lightweight and resistant to corrosion. Single piece cast aluminum can also be painted, machined or chrome plated. Alloy rims are also lightweight, and they look great (the price you pay definitely shows). Alloy rims also provide better performance and stability than most other wheels, and the rims are better balanced. Still, they can be very expensive to repair and can even shatter beyond repair if in a heavy collision.

Many rims exist more for style purposes than practical ones. Like their name suggests, light-alloy forged rims are very light. These rims can also be painted, machined or plated with chrome (a popular choice). Like steel or composite rims, however, these can be rather expensive. Piece aluminum or modular rims are also expensive, but the manufacturing process used allows the designers to create very unique styles. Because of the unique styling, however, chrome plating is very difficult and can’t always be done.

Depending on what you are looking for, you may need to get your rims custom-made. For instance, many 24 inch rims and tires for sale are custom-made to suit the buyer’s needs. Or, you will have to buy specifically from designers that make rims for your type of vehicle. For example, finding quality Lowrider rims and tires for sale can be challenging despite there being a large variety. Be sure to read reviews from both consumers and designers.

Of course, almost all tires and rims for sale are on the expensive side. That being said, if money is truly an issue there exist plenty of used rims and tires for sale that may be appropriate for your needs. There are a lot of these on posting websites like Craigslist, but buyer beware; some of these used items may be too used.

Getting rims and tires for cheap can be a great thing, but they won’t last long if they are worn down. Therefore, always make sure you find out how many years old they are and just what kind of shape they are in. Remember that if a deal seems way too good to be true, it probably is.

Once you have your new tires and/or rims, you’ll want to take good care of them. Periodic maintenance is necessary to preserve the life of your wheels overall, as doing so will help prevent you from having to buy new ones anytime soon. Salt, dirt, gravel and the elements can wear away the finish of your wheels. You must keep them clean in order to maintain the finish.

For chrome wheels, you can wash them with soap and water. Apply the soap using a soft sponge, then rinse and dry with a clean rag or towel. If you allow them to air dry, certain minerals in the water may leave spots on the chrome that you may never be able to remove. You should also wax and polish your wheels on occasion to keep them looking their best.

Many tires and rims for sale also come with some sort of warranty when purchased, and for some this can last a lifetime. For the most part, however, it depends on the brand and model that you purchase. These warranties will only come from an official dealer, however, so if you purchase any tires or rims via Craigslist or eBay you are unlikely to get one.
