Becky Hammon

What an exciting time in the NBA! Becky Hammon and the San Antonio Spurs have made history as she has become the first female assistant head coach in the NBA. Was she right for the job? Is this a big step for the NBA? Was this a publicity stunt? Lets take a look at Becky Hammon and the skills that have brought her to the NBA.

Becky Hammon Spurs

Who is Becky Hammon? Born March 11, 1977 Becky Hammon played pro basketball for 16 seasons. This includes playing over 400 games. While playing in the WNBA Becky averaged 13 points  along side almost 4 assists per game. She is known for her ability to score on players much taller than herself as well as her high basketball IQ.

Greg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, had this to say "I very much look forward to the addition of Becky hammon to our staff, Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs."(1)

The San Antonio Spurs are well know for their ability to attract the talent they need to be a high level competing team every year. Under Greg Popovich the San Antonio Spurs have had a record .610 or better since the 1997-98 season. This is an impressive feat. Greg Popovich is also know to be very focused and have little patience for publicity stunts. Having just won the NBA championship this last year, the Spurs already have as much publicity as you can get.

While hiring a female assistant head coach has made headlines, there is very little that would lead people to believe that this is a publicity stunt. Becky Hammon knows basketball. I join with most of the Basketball world in congratulating Becky on her new career and hope that she, and many others that will surely follow her, have great success!
