uPVC Windows Dominate The Windows Market

By | Nov 19, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

The figures tell the tale. uPVC windows are the dominating force in the windows installation market, both in new construction and replacement of old windows. Most modern homes have uPVC windows installed and many older homes have had uPVC replacement windows fitted when their existing windows have needed replacing.

When you think that uPVC windows only came into general production and use 40 to 50 years ago this has been nothing short of an amazing transformation in the windows market.

The question that could be asked is why has uPVC come to dominate as the material of choice in window production over the last half century?

One of the main reasons that uPVC windows are more popular than timber or aluminum windows is that uPVC windows seal well and give excellent insulation around the window frame. In tandem with the introduction of uPVC as a material for producing window frames has been the increase in consumer awareness with regard to home insulation, thermal capacity of houses and the cost of home heating.

Security and safety are also reasons that uPVC window, and doors for that matter, are popular. uPVC windows and doors have multi-point locking systems fitted into the frames and this makes them more difficult to force. That combined with uPVC double glazing means that burglars find it more difficult to access through uPVC windows than other window types. Timber windows can warp in wet weather, which can make them difficult to open and this can be a safety issue in the case of a home emergency.

This excellent sealing prevents heat loss and also helps to stop dust and other allergens from entering the home. This is why allergy sufferers favour uPVC windows to keep dust mites and pollen to a minimum in the home.

Timber windows have tremendous character but do need quiet a bit of maintenance over their lifetime and this can be time consuming and expensive. uPVC windows are very easy to maintain and really only need wiping down and some lubrication of moving parts to keep them working properly.

If uPVC windows did have an Achilles heel in the past it was that they looked quite boring. They were mainly white and uninteresting. With advanced production methods, uPVC can now be produced in various colours and wood grain effects are quite common. In fact it can be difficult to tell uPVC windows apart from timber windows unless you are at close quarters.

Given all of the above advantages and given also the fact that uPVC windows are very competitive when it comes to cost, it is easy to see why thy are so popular and to see that timber window manufacturers have an uphill battle ahead of them.
